ヴェローナの都に、二人の若き紳士が住んでいた。ヴァレンタインとプローティアスという名であり、切れ目なき友情で長きにわたり堅く結ばれた間柄、共に学び、暇あらば共に過ごす。
ある朝、ヴァレンタインがプローティアスを訪ね、これよりミランに出立する由《よし》、暫しの別れを告げる。プローティアスが、友と離れまいと言葉尽くして説き伏せ引き留めんとするも、ヴァレンタインは耳を貸さない。かくして佳き友ふたりは、変わらぬ友情を誓い合って別れる。

その後、プローティアスは父についた小さな嘘が元で、最愛の恋人ジューリアと離れ離れとなり、親友の待つミランに旅立つ。無二の親友ヴァレンタインに再会したプローティアスが目にしたのは、ヴァレンタインの傍らに立つ絶世の美女シルヴィアだった・・・。
