The Asperger's Syndrome Bible for parents and professionals, newly updated with an introduction explaining the DSM-5

The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome is the definitive handbook for anyone affected by Asperger's syndrome (AS). Now including a new introduction explaining the impact of DSM-5 on the diagnosis and approach to AS, it brings together a wealth of information on all aspects of the syndrome for children through to adults.

Drawing on case studies and personal accounts from Attwood's extensive clinical experience, and from his correspondence with individuals with AS, this book is both authoritative and extremely accessible. Chapters examine:

* causes and indications of the syndrome
* the diagnosis and its effect on the individual
* theory of mind
* the perception of emotions in self and others
* social interaction, including friendships
* long-term relationships
* teasing, bullying and mental health issues
* the effect of AS on language and cognitive abilities, sensory sensitivity, movement and co-ordination skills
* career development.

There is also an invaluable frequently asked questions chapter and a section listing useful resources for anyone wishing to find further information on a particular aspect of AS, as well as literature and educational tools.

Essential reading for families and individuals affected by AS as well as teachers, professionals and employers coming in contact with people with AS, this book should be on the bookshelf of anyone who needs to know or is interested in this complex condition.

'I usually say to the child, "Congratulations, you have Asperger's syndrome", and explain that this means he or she is not mad, bad or defective, but has a different way of thinking.'

Tony Atwood is a well-respected authority on ASD and has written very thorough explanation of the condition - not just what it is, but how it feels to live with it and the difficulties we Autistic people face in trying to understand and navigate a neurotypical world.

Covers all aspects of autistic life, from small children to adults and for those with all levels of support needs (whether they’re “high-functioning” or not). It talks about school, friendships, work, relationships, emotions and special interests, all with a compassion and understanding not often found in books written by non-Autistic people.

Includes tips to overcome the difficulties associated with as AS diagnosis, and quotes from interviews with people who are autistic themselves.

An excellent book, and thoroughly recommended for those who have an autism diagnosis, or who suspect they might be autistic, or who have a family member who has been diagnosed.

I learned that many people can have Asperger traits. Where I used to get angry with family members that make my life difficult, I can now see that their awkward behaviour is due to their lack of skills in that area. Thank you for this perspective.

I love this book and it taught me a lot

As someone who was late diagnosed as being autistic (having ASD) only a year ago aged 18, the psychologist who diagnosed me had this book one his list of recommendations and it did not disappoint. It’s respectfully and eloquently explains the autistic experience and struggles that other autistic people face that maybe I don’t struggle with myself. Whilst I don’t identify with the term Asperger’s syndrome and am diagnosed with moderate ASD, this was still a great read and I have people in my life who do identify with the term. Worth a listen, I’m actually going to listen to it again right away as I found it so insightful.

I listened to this prior to my own Asperger's assessment (and subsequent diagnosis). This book has helped me to clarify and forget all my old prejudices about autism, and cement the idea that I was certainly a good match for the diagnostic criteria.

A suggestion for anyone on a waiting list for assessment -- while you are reading this book, take notes of everything that comes to mind.

Categorise the notes into special interests, sensitivities, stimming, masking, social issues, collections and anything else you can think of -- and go back as far into your childhood as you can remember. I further divided my notes into three columns; childhood, adolescence and adulthood.

If, like me, you have short term memory issues, you will need to refer to these during the interviews, or you may forget pertinent information. Not all assessors are the same, and some have their own ideas -- you need to show them that you are autistic, you need to lose the masks -- otherwise you risk not being heard.

I wish you all well, and thank you for this book Dr Attwood.

Essential listening for everyone with an interest.
