THE TWISTY NEW THRILLER FROM THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE RUMOUR

Scarlett's aunt lived - and was brutally murdered - in the apartment upstairs. But Scarlett is determined that life return to some kind of normal, even if that means living with just a ceiling between her and the scene of this devastating crime. After all, this is her home. She's safe here. Isn't she?

Dee is busy balancing her job as a funeral director with organising an event to mark the disappearance of her best friend, ten years ago. So she's got enough on her plate without worrying about the threatening messages that are appearing on her company's Facebook page.

When Scarlett approaches Dee about planning her aunt's funeral, there emerges an unexpected link between them. Together, the two women could uncover secrets that have long been buried. Even while someone wants to stop them digging . . .

Critic reviews

Startlingly original . . . It's hard to think of a recent novel than can match Kara's for an almost unbearable level of suspense.
A satisfying thriller that oozes with menace.
A powerful, compelling tale about dark secrets that won't stay buried, with a palpable sense of dread that builds on every page

I loved this absorbing, twisty mystery - Lesley Kara has done it again!

Twisty and tense, another great read from Lesley Kara.
Lesley returns with her best thriller yet - The Apartment Upstairs is the sort of read that will have you listening out for creaks in the floorboards from other rooms. A perfect blend of complex, human characters and unrelenting suspense. Lesley Kara is incomparable.
THE APARTMENT UPSTAIRS is taut, tense, dark and claustrophobic with a creeping sense of menace and a cast of compelling characters. I gulped it down in two sittings.
A twisted plot to get my teeth into, believable well written characters and loads of nail-biting suspense. Loved it!
Clever and twisty with some brilliant examination of loyalties between friends and within families.
Lesley Kara always delivers. The Apartment Upstairs is a brilliantly written, immersive thriller that draws readers into a twisty world of secrets and murder, and doesn't let go until the very last page. Highly recommended.

A good book but maybe not quite a favourite, interesting and different careers of the main characters.

Overall good

Especially after the summary write up, which makes the book seem much more exciting. Actually it was a bit dull and I often found my attention wondering off and not listening. Didn't really grip me at all.

A bit of a disappointment

I have loved every book by this author, and this book was no different. The cast of characters are credible and well developed . The location is well drawn. The story moves along at a good pace. I read this in a day, and now can't wait for her next book to sea whether we are staying in London or going back to the seaside.

Another great read

I didn’t like the beginning, the topic but because Lesley Kara was one of my favourite authors I decided to read/listen more. And then couldn’t stop. Well done.

Very engaging

The story is so far fetched - spoiler alert - both protagonists are 40 year old closeted lesbians who happen to be sleeping with murderers?! Honestly there isn’t a single person close to either protagonist who isn’t some form of criminal! Bonkers

Appalling book - do not bother
