About this listen

The complete ninth series of BBC Radio 4's award-winning sketch show.

John Finnemore returns with his multi-award-winning sketch show, but this series is very different to the previous eight. There are still sketches and songs, and it's still written and performed by him and his usual fantastic ensemble cast - but with no live studio audience, John has taken the opportunity to try something new.

Each episode in this series of Souvenir Programme consists of scenes from one person's life, played in reverse order. There's no narrative as such - it's still a sketch show - but as we follow the characters back in time, from lockdown Zoom calls to childhood birthdays and funerals, the individual sketches link up to form an overall picture, portraying the sprawling history of an entire multi-generational family.

And, as if that wasn't enough, there are also some terrific tall tales, a paean of praise and a truly unforgettable earworm....

Clever, complex, hilarious and poignant, these Souvenir Programmes with a twist star Lawry Lewin as Russ, Margaret Cabourn-Smith as Deborah, Simon Kane as Jerry, Carrie Quinlan as Vanessa and John Finnemore as Newt.

"One of our best sketch writers." (Observer)

A number of meaningful stories working backwards through the years. uncovering little details as the story rewinds made me feel really good. It's not the sidesplitting continuous laughter fest as the previous series but a really well created humourous interwoven story still to make you chortle. I loved it!!

A brilliant twist to the standard format.

I will admit to having been one of those folk who, when listening to this on R4, gave up after two episodes because although I liked it, it wasn’t what I expected. But then when all the episodes were out, I gave it another chance. By the end of episode 3, the penny had dropped and I binge listened to it. And then for a second time. And now own it forever because it’s just that good. So well crafted, the way all the parts tie together, a true family tale told with the heart you expect from JF. it’s different, for sure. But it’s worth persevering with. Someone’s even made a website with all the links between sketches!

Just brilliant

Finnemore's a genius. Turning sketch comedy on its head and creating sublime art.

Series 9 gives one a feeling of a complete world, a sense of family and belonging, using nothing more than witty sketches the whole cast bring to life a story told like no other. Sensational.

Quite possibly the best series of radio ever made.

Tonally this very different to the previous series, and some people may not like that. Much as I love the Man who Makes the sound of the TARDIS or the sketch about Mr. Floofywhiskers, this is a very different show. I found it quite moving in parts...but you need to listen to the whole thing. Everything pays off in the end. It definitely bears listening to over and over again.

Very different but very probably a work of genius

Unlike the previous series in style and format but once you’re able to put all the stories together it’s a charming, delightful and funny story.

Like a lot of the reviews here I was baffled by this new series after the first couple of episodes, so much so I didn’t bother listening to the final episodes for months. When I did listen to them eventually and realised that each episode was telling the story of one characters life (not necessarily in order) and that altogether the episode told the story of many generations of one family, it all started to make sense. It’s almost like a puzzle, but once you unlock it, it really is joyful, with new amusing, intriguing and touching details to be found over multiple listens.

I completely get why there are so many bad reviews for this, but I’d say to those reviewers, I bet if you go back and listen again, this time focus on the detail of the story and the characters you’ll find something in it you didn’t realise was there on first listen.

This has replaced Double Acts series 2 as my favourite Finnemore work.

Brilliant - if you put in the effort…
