Set against the backdrop of gathering war, A Song for Summer is an unforgettable love story from master storyteller Eva Ibbotson.

When Ellen Carr abandons grey, dreary London to become housekeeper at an experimental school in Austria, she soon knows she's found her calling. Swept into an idyllic world of mountains, music, eccentric teachers and wayward children, Ellen brings order and joy to all around her. But it's the handsome, mysterious gardener, Marek, who intrigues her – Marek, who has a dangerous secret. As Hitler's troops march across Europe, Ellen finds she has promises to keep, even if it means sacrificing her future happiness...©2006 Eva Ibbotson (P)2019 W. F. Love a quirky look at a infldividual's story in the context of a wider political backdrop and this delivers. characters drawn with a light touch but beautifully developed. Story could have resolved earlier, the last part felt like a director's cut, but still good.

Gentle, quirky story telling

A perfect story for a teenager who doesn’t get out much and wishes she’d been born in another century. It drips sweetness and borrows from other romantic novels. Marek, the tall, strong, handsome, but complicated hero. The angelic, beautiful, graceful and good Ellen, a heroine without ego, who would bore Marek within seconds in real life. There’s even a house fire - and why Marek disappears into it only to be seen 3 years later, is never explained. Penelope Rawlin’s pronunciation of some words threw me. Clique became clack. Carvarlier for cavalier. I think she was trying to say Hermione but will have to check a hard copy of the book.

A fairy tale...
