About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Welcome to the Winter Garden. Open only at 13 o'clock.

You are invited to enter an unusual competition.

I am looking for the most magical, spectacular, remarkable pleasure garden this world has to offer.

On the night her mother dies, eight-year-old Beatrice receives an invitation to the mysterious Winter Garden. A place of wonder and magic, filled with all manner of strange and spectacular flora and fauna, the garden is her solace every night for seven days. But when the garden disappears, and no one believes her story, Beatrice is left to wonder if it were truly real.

Eighteen years later, on the eve of her wedding to a man her late father approved of but she does not love, Beatrice makes the decision to throw off the expectations of Victorian English society and search for the garden. But when both she and her closest friend, Rosa, receive invitations to compete to create spectacular pleasure gardens - with the prize being one wish from the last of the Winter Garden's magic - she realises she may be closer to finding it than she ever imagined.

Now all she has to do is win.

This story reminded me of the Night Circus and there's something of The Ladies of Grace Adieu too. I loved the magical setting and enjoyed the wonders of the gardens. Under the fantasy there's a thoughtful story of women trying to find their place in world. Thoroughly recommended.

Loved it!

Loved this book right the way through. One of the most magical and memorable books, I was desperate yet sad to finish it! The narrator was also amazing.

Magical Story

Truly wonderful - night circus, midnight in everwood and spinning silver vibes but better than all 3. Love the narration too

Magical

I was very in sure about this book, I left it a good while before listening to it again to help me really understand my feelings towards it.
The story telling is amazing, the dialogue perfect, and the magic exceptional. It does a brilliant job at taking in right into the pages! However the characters are challenging to like, I found myself not likening either of the two main characters which then left me feeling frustrated by their choices and actions, I felt no connection to them and almost annoying at times.
Other than this the story is deep and meaningful, filled with wonder and mystery which I enjoyed.

An imagination feast.

Lovely book. Really great if you like lots of imagery and are prepared to suspend disbelief. A magical world set against a male dominated society, a tale of feminist struggle, revenge and acceptance. Great narration too.

Prepare to be transported
