A clever and satisfying crime novel. The audio treatment is superb. The different voices for all the characters are distinctive and convincing. there are also some great twists and the story keeps the listener guessing throughout.

I failed to get into this audio book at the first attempt and left it several months before I tried again. That time, I was gripped and couldn’t stop listening.

I love crime stories, and had read and enjoyed another of Knox’s books which is what tempted me to this one. I also know Manchester which is where he sets his books.

But this is completely different to anything I’ve read/listened to before and and so convincing that I have to admit to Googling to double check that it really wasn’t based on a True Story. It appeared that I wasn’t the only one to have done so. So we’ll done Joseph Knox for the double bluff and for a great twist at the end. I sort of guessed who but definitely not how!

I would suggest starting to listen to this when you can dedicate a fair amount of time at the beginning to fully concentrate on listening in order to familiarise yourself with all the characters and their voices. It’s definitely not an audio book to listen to while doing anything other than mindless tasks as it can get quite complicated with so many people involved! Well worth the effort though.
