About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The best-selling author of A Gentleman in Moscow and Rules of Civility and master of absorbing, sophisticated fiction returns with a stylish and propulsive novel set in 1950s America.

In June, 1954, 18-year-old Emmett Watson is driven home to Nebraska by the warden of the juvenile work farm where he has just served 15 months for involuntary manslaughter. His mother long gone, his father recently deceased and the family farm foreclosed upon by the bank, Emmett's intention is to pick up his eight-year-old brother, Billy, and head to California where they can start their lives anew. But when the warden drives away, Emmett discovers that two friends from the work farm have hidden themselves in the trunk of the warden's car. Together, they have hatched an altogether different plan for Emmett's future, one that will take them all on a fateful journey in the opposite direction - to the city of New York.

Spanning just 10 days and told from multiple points of view, Towles' third novel will satisfy fans of his multi-layered literary styling while providing them an array of new and richly imagined settings, characters and themes.

Did not find this this as absorbing as the other two novels. At first enjoyed the different viewpoints of the same action but ended up wishing they would stop. However that said the characters with all their flaws were fascinating.

Can get tedious …

Loved it. What a great story. Funny and touching in parts. Narration is perfect.

Brilliant

I had absolutely no idea what to expect when I ordered this book just to use up some credits but it turns out to be a road trip with a difference, and very entertaining at that.

Why anybody would conceive of this storyline and characters is beyond me but it definitely works. I gave it 5 stars although four and a half would be more realistic ie it's not a classic but still very good.

Weird, but Good

I loved this story which was beautifully written, absolutely absorbing and fantastically narrated. I felt completely invested in the characters and their journey - in every sense. Highly recommended

Wonderful and highly recommended

An insightful, well drawn story line develops the characters and interaction with humanity and daring. It leaves one enriched - even by the poignant sadness therein.
