Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Miles from anywhere, the isolated mansion Darracott Place is presided over by the irascible Lord Darracott.

The recent drowning of his eldest son has done nothing to improve his temper. For now he must send for the unknown offspring of the uncle whom the family are never permitted to mention. Yet none of that beleaguered family are prepared for the arrival of the weaver's brat and heir apparent....

Yet again Georgette Heyer shows the qualities that made her one of the most successful and best-loved romantic novelists of her age, and why her popularity endures to this day.

Critic reviews

"Absolutely delicious tales of Regency heroes.... Utter, immersive escapism." (Sophie Kinsella)

"One of my perennial comfort authors. Heyer's books are as incisively witty and quietly subversive as any of Jane Austen's." (Joanne Harris)

"Heart-stoppingly gorgeous." (Harriet Evans)

"Georgette Heyer is second to none." (Sunday Times)

I love Georgette Heyer for her light humorous escapist tales, and The Unknown Ajax has always been one of my favourites - but the narrator for it on the previous version available on Audible was so bad at women's voices I could never listen to it beyond the first couple of chapters, though I tried a few times. I was really happy to see a new version was going to be available and waited eagerly for its release. I haven't been disappointed.

Thomas Judd is excellent at voices, male and female, and they are all distinct and excellently done. His narration has good animation without the flatness that sometimes happens when there are long passages without dialogue and his voice is very pleasant to listen to. There are a few mistakes, but so minor compared to the overall excellence that I've no hesitation at all in giving this five stars and will definitely listen again (and again) with pleasure.

Some of the new Audibles of Heyer's tales don't live up to the original ones, this one is pure delight. In fact although I have most of her novels on Audible from the previous generation of narrators - Phyllida Nash et al, who are also excellent - I'd count this as one of the best narrations I've heard.

Wonderful if you love Heyer

A slightly different setting and storyline. Set in Sussex with smuggling as a side plot and a Yorkshire man as a hero. Accents ably dealt with by Thomas Judd. Another cracking Heyer historical novel. Not just a romance

Good narration from new young actor

Loved the way the narrator voiced the different characters.
A great tale of smugglers and a prejudiced impoverished upper class family. A delightful hero too. Plenty of period detail especially the ways of the upper classes at that time. I want to listen again immediately.
