About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Bruce Lee's daughter illuminates her father's most powerful life philosophies and how we can apply his teachings to our daily lives.

Empty your mind; be formless, shapeless like water

Bruce Lee is a cultural icon, world renowned for his martial arts and film legacy. But Lee was also a deeply philosophical thinker, believing that martial arts are more than just an exercise in physical discipline - they are a perfect metaphor for personal growth.

In Be Water, My Friend Shannon Lee shares previously untold stories from her father's life along with the concepts at the core of his teachings. Each chapter reveals a lesson from Bruce Lee, expanding on the foundation of his iconic 'be water' philosophy to reveal a path to an enlightened way of being.

This is an inspirational call to action to consider our lives with new eyes and a testament to Lee's unique power to ignite our imaginations and transform our lives.

There are few books that aim to show you "the way" that have as much heartfelt humanity and personal experience than this book. Shannon Lee does an immense job of narrating her words. And the deep dive into Bruce Lee's philosophies are not only revelatory but actionable.

One of the best self-help books I've listened. Hugely inspirational and one I'll be returning to often.

Fantastic read!

A beautifully narrated book about the personal life and values and philosophy of Bruce Lee. Not your usual self-help book as it’s very realistic and non-judgemental. Immensely enjoyed this!!

Good book!

Ah, what a brilliant book. This is head and shoulders my favourite personal development book to date. Shannon Lee gives her own take on the teachings of her father, the martial arts prodigy, actor and philosopher. She shares her insights with empathy and humility, kindness and integrity, honesty and good humour, adding plenty of her own thoughts and interpretations along the way. She reminds me a little of Ruby Wax in her delivery, and feels like a good friend with each of our best interests at heart. I have played and replayed Ch2 in particular, and other sections, to cement the nuggets of wisdom in my mind and to share with family.

Where some books in this vein are very self-aggrandising and phoney and feel like they're selling you some amazing secret (as in, *follow my incredible patented system to unlock a new, happier, highly effective, fully actualised you in 30 days*), this book feels much more honest and humble and ultimately acknowledges we are all responsible for finding our own path. It is the opposite of an irritating ego trip. I've found the idea of fluidity/flow, emptying your cup and not giving energy away to negativity (and instead conserving it) particularly helpful. This is a book for anyone - not just Bruce Lee and martial arts fans (I knew pretty much zero about BL). A phenomenal and truly beautiful book. Thank you 🙏

Shannon delivers such a beautiful, easy listen. Her voice presents her words based on her father's philosophy so well.
I listened much quicker than I thought for such a book yet took it in and enjoyed it so much.
I have already decided I will listen at least once a year and will most likely buy the actual book too.
Thank you Shannon, I feel you were reading simultaneously with your father such was the feeling it evoked.
I will endeavour to be water, my friend.

A beautiful, easy yet thought provoking listen
