About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

You don’t get biceps like Briggs by giving up when the going gets tough....

CrossFit superstar Sam Briggs, a.k.a. ‘The Engine’, is a true hero in the sport, with a level of endurance unparalleled in the game. This is the story of how she got to the top and battled with everything she had to stay there.

Sam’s memoir takes in the whole story, from being kicked out of ballet lessons as a child but being accepted on the boys’ sports teams, to working as a firefighter in West Yorkshire for 10 years, tackling dangerous and adrenaline-fueled situations on a daily basis and to taking up CrossFit at the comparatively ancient age of 27. Sam tells of what it took to become champion a mere three years later and after a year out with a broken patella. Despite the numerous setbacks and debilitating injuries that have plagued her in the years that followed, when most other athletes would have thrown in the towel, Sam has fought and continues to fight, to be the very best that she can be.

Start Your Engines is the story of how, with a combination of grit, training and dogged motivation, it’s never too late to achieve your dreams.

Very enjoyable book with lots of insights into the mind and life of a high level Crossfitter.

I was put off by some of the reviews that slated the narrator but I gave it a go anyway as I have an interest in Crossfit. I have to admit that after being so used to American or neutral accents reading books that this narrator seemed strange to listen to at first. But knowing what Sam Briggs sounds like I thought it's not too dissimilar to her accent so I've stuck with the book. And I'm glad that I did, its an excellent book so far and I found myself quickly getting used to listening to the narrators northern twangs

So give it a go you won't be disappointed....It's the best Crossfit related book I have listened to so far!

Very enjoyable (with good narration)

Incredible competitor and a great insight into her life but very difficult to listen to on account of the narrators voice. Couldn’t sound less like an inspiring CrossFit champion. I don’t mind the accent but the pitch and tone were so wrong.

Wish I’d read the hard copy

Content was good but completely ruined by a dreadful narrator with, what sounded like, an awful, put on accent. Completely ruined the book for me.

Dreadful Narration

The narrator is like a really bad children’s story reader - this is a book I would have really enjoyed listening to but only managed 10mins before giving up. I live up north so used to the accent but this really grated on me - I’m sure your overseas fans will find this 10x more annoying. A reader with more universal accent would be far better.
Will have to read it instead. What a shame though!

Please change the narrator

The narrator has made this really hard to listen to, as an adult it was not dissimilar to listening to my kids ‘famous five’ audio books. I need to buy the book and read myself.

Not keen on the narrators voice
