About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

On the Black Hill is an elegantly written tale of identical twin brothers who grow up on a farm in rural Wales and never leave home. They till the rough soil and sleep in the same bed, touched only occasionally by the advances of the 20th century.

In depicting the lives of Benjamin and Lewis and their interactions with their small local community Chatwin comments movingly on the larger questions of human experience.

First read this 40 years ago and it has lost none of its charm. Listened to it on Audible after going for a walk over the Black Hill. The narrator is a brilliant match - superb.

What a brilliant book, I have read his travel writing and thought I’d give this one a go. Beautifully written with amazing depth to character and story detail. I didn’t want to leave their world!

Great story, with character descriptions so well done, I could see them and remember people like them from my childhood. Wonderfully narrated.
