Summary
The number one Sunday Times best-selling author of The Silence of the Lambs and the creator of Hannibal Lecter, Thomas Harris, returns with his first stand-alone thriller since his debut novel, Black Sunday.
Critic reviews
"The last two decades of 19th century popular fiction were dominated by Conan Doyle and Sherlock Homes. A century on, suspense literature has achieved their equals in Thomas Harris." (The Guardian)
"Harris’s writing bears the hallmarks of honed perfection." (The Times)

I had hoped for a bit more,
but I must say I look forward to the movie.
Don't misunderstand me, this is still THE Thomas Harris and is probably one of the best novels to come out this year, but having been a fan for twenty years or more, I can't help but pine a bit for the days of Hannibal and Black Sunday. The character development and the plot both felt rushed and the entire novel was easily finished during my shift at the factory.

Reasonable
I was very excited about this book. I agreed with the other reviewers who say that this author, who reads himself, should probably give way to another reader. For me it flattened the whole experience. All in all I found the story lacked real pace and depth and the characters lacked synergy, motive and cohesion but that could again be something to do with the reading performance. Not a page turner for me but something I dutifully plodded back to in the hope of an upturn. It’s not a book that will particularly remain with me and I sincerely hope other readers get much more out of it than I did. Worth a try but manage your expectations.

Good old fashioned storytelling.
I think I must have listened to a different book from others! I loved it and I absolutely loved the narration too.
I loved Cari and her parakeet and the cast of characters.
If you love Thomas Harris, and I do, you'll love this book right up to the exciting end!

Could have been better
Narration was awful - leave to the professionals. Story was ok but everything was rushed and a bit unclear...but that could also have been due to the narration

A Distant Protagonist
Harris is know for his fantastic writer quality and its all there. However, our title protagonist Cari is left hidden in a cast of much better characters and another brilliant antagonist.

A real disappointment
After reading and listening to the lector series which I loved, I expected to be drawn into another dark novel with unsettling , well-written characters. Sadly I was wrong! I liked the fact the author read the book as he would be the one to understand and better express his work but still I found myself drifting from boredom and confusion. The times I forced myself to concentrate, I could not understand what was occurring or who was talking to whom. With every new chapter, I had to check back I hadn’t missed some of the story accidentally as the book seemed to jump about constantly but never really move forward with the plot. Most of the characters were shallow and similar to each other so I was unable to tell them apart. I am still not entirely sure why the book was named after the lady in the story as she was dull and seemed somewhat insignificant and hardly a heroine figure. A real disappointment for Harris I’m sad to say.
