About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

'The women in this family, we're different....'

Blythe Connor doesn't want history to repeat itself.

Violet is her first child and she will give her daughter all the love she deserves. All the love that her own mother withheld.

But firstborns are never easy. And Violet is demanding and fretful. She never smiles. Soon Blythe believes she can do no right - that something's very wrong. Either with her daughter, or herself.

Her husband, Fox, says she's imagining it. But Violet's different with him. And he can't understand what Blythe suffered as a child. No one can.

Blythe wants to be a good mother. But what if that's not enough for Violet? Or her marriage? What if she can't see the darkness coming?

Mother and daughter. Angel or monster?

We don't get to choose our inheritance - or who we are....

The Push is an addictive, gripping and compulsive listen that asks what happens when women are not believed - and what if motherhood isn't everything you hoped for but everything you always feared?

This book blew me away it is extraordinary, one of those books that stays with and haunts the listener. It is essentially a story of motherhood told in flashbacks over three generations of women. It questions nature v nurture and the ability to love passed on mother to child. The three women's stories are so similar placed in different generations with different social constructs, it questions the belief that you automatically love the child you give birth to. Blythe the most recent mother struggles with loving her first child Violet, is she even loveable or is Blythe's past impinging on her ability to give Violet love? Could the tragedy that occurs have been avoided and that is central to Blythe's character throughout the second half of the book. The writer so beautifully captures each women's torment, this book is so well written the dialogue sparse and totally relevant no frills. It was one of those books I wanted to listen to in one sitting and then felt bereaved when it was finished. The narrator was superb and I just cannot fault this wonderful book.

Superior in every way beautifully written

Brutally honest. About a mother's instincts entwined with her doubts. This is a very powerful read / listen. Highly recommended.

I wasn’t sure for the first couple of chapters, whether this was really for me, but once I got into it, I loved this book

This is great

Blown away by this original, different and yes, challenging, narrative. Something that will resonate in the depths of every mother's soul.
