About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A chilling exploration into obsession, reconciliation and revenge in 2020's must-read novel.

Rose Gold Watts believed she was sick for eighteen years.

She thought she needed the feeding tube, the surgeries, the wheelchair . . .

Turns out her mum, Patty, is a really good liar.

After five years in prison Patty Watts is finally free. All she wants is to put old grievances behind her, reconcile with her daughter - and care for her new infant grandson. When Rose Gold agrees to have Patty move in, it seems their relationship is truly on the mend.

But Rose Gold knows her mother. Patty won't rest until she has her daughter back under her thumb. Which is inconvenient because Rose Gold wants to be free of Patty. Forever.

Only one Watts will get what she wants.

Will it be Patty or Rose Gold?

Mother, or daughter?

Critic reviews

An absolutely brilliant book; funny, dark, authentic and a total page turner. I loved it
Sensationally good - two complex characters power the story like a nuclear reaction, and won't let you forget them. Wrobel is one to watch.
A rivetingly nasty psychological duel
With a genuine menace seeping from every twist and turn, the two central characters inhabit every page with captivating ferocity, and the denouement is worthy of Patricia Highsmith at her finest: quite superb
Pacey and vivid, this is a delicate, merciless probing of a topicas unsettling as it is intriguing, with no pat answers
A spine-chilling thriller injected with themes of obsession and revenge . . . Perfect for fans of Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl and Paula Hawkin's The Girl on the Train, The Recovery of Rose Gold is set to be next year's biggest thriller
A dark, nerve-jangling read that kept us on the edge of our seats till the very end
Takes twisted mum and daughter relationships to a whole new level. Think Misery meets Sharp Objects
You'll be hooked on this revenge tale
It's rare for something genuinely fresh to come along in this genre, but this book has it all - a killer premise, twisty plotting, crisp writing and compelling characters. Dazzling, dark and utterly delicious

Wow! If you like dark and twisted then strap yourself in for a while ride! My initial thoughts after reading the blurb and starting the book was that this was going to be a fictional re-hashing of the true crime case of Gypsy Lee and DeeDee Blanchard and I thought there would be some similarities with the memoir Sickened. I was wrong. It does seem at first that it will be a fairly straightforward novel about Munchausen by Proxy. A sick mother creating a sick daughter… and to an extent it is that. It is about a sick mother and she does create a sick daughter… a very sick daughter. The novel is an edge-of-your-seat game of cat and mouse. It is like a deadly game of chess but without knowing which character to root for. I have never been so confused by what evil looks like and who the “bad guy” was. It really put a spin on what I expected and had a thoroughly gripping ending. A highly entertaining whirlwind of book!

I really enjoyed this book. Wrobel is a skilled character writer and what stood out for me was the way she fully realises Patty and Rose Gold without delving in to long storylines about the suffering they have both endured together and in their seperate childhoods. This topic (munchausens/child abuse) is often covered in very dark, emotionally draining and sometimes “torture porn”y books and it was interesting to see it handled here in a book that is more focussed on a suspenseful unravelling of a mystery. Instead Patty and RG come to life through their thoughts and words, the language of their needs; Patty entitled and controlling, always put upon and needing praise, Rose Golds understandable mix of her childish need for attention and her absolute suffering at the hands of adults. The story takes you along with it and you want to know what happens the end, but this is what stood out for me. Wrobel is definitely one to watch!

A skilled spin on a push and pull plot

Generally good story, plot pretty guessable, but I enjoyed it overall. American narration slightly grating, but you get used to it.

I bought this book and the audio nearly 4 years ago and have finally gotten around to it. I know the story it's "based" on and I just really enjoyed the twists and turns. I saw a few coming but one in particular got me. While this might not the the "thriller" it's marketed as I enjoyed it as a nice palate cleanser.
