About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

The spellbinding story of love, friendship and the power of words to change the world by the international bestselling author of
Me Before You

The greatest love story is the one you least expect . . .

Alice Wright doesn't love her new American husband.

Nor her domineering father-in-law or the judgmental townsfolk of Baileyville, Kentucky.

Stifled and misunderstood, she yearns for escape and finds it in defiant Margery O'Hare and the sisterhood bringing books to the isolated and vulnerable.

But when her father-in-law and the town turn against them, Alice fears the freedom, friendship and new love she's found will be lost . . .

Read by Audie-award winner Julie Whelan.

Love the depth of the characters in Jojo’s books. This is no exception. You become fully immersed in Alice and Marjories lives and I couldn’t wait for the next car journey or quiet house to listen to a bit more. Julia Whelan is an excellent narrator and gives each character a life of its own. Sad to have finished it.

Loved it.

This book really has a bit of everything, really engaging plot, fantastic characters and superb narration.

The story develops and builds beautifully, if not alittle predictable towards the end.

Another alluring read from the talented Ms Moyes; a great story, beautifully written. The narration here deserves a special mention; Whelan’s mellifluous voice tells a story with feeling but no excessive drama. She’s a wonderful performer who doesn’t get in the way of the performance and therefore the fantasy, and she switches between accents effortlessly and convincingly- outstanding

Enjoyable story, outstanding narration
