About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Out of the Dark by Gregg Hurwitz, read by Scott Brick.

As a boy, Evan Smoak was taken from the orphanage he called home and inducted into a top secret Cold War programme. Trained as a lethal weapon, he and his fellow recruits were sent round the world to do the government's dirty work.

But the programme was rotten to the core. And now the man responsible needs things to be nice and clean. All evidence must be destroyed. That includes Evan.

To survive, Evan's going to have to take the fight to his nemesis. There's just one problem with that. Jonathan Bennett is President of the United States and Evan isn't his only victim.

To save himself - and the country - Evan is going to have to figure out how to kill the most well-protected man on the planet...

Critic reviews

Even more compelling than its predecessors. Hurwitz uses every ounce of his exceptional skill to describe the elaborate plans that exist to protect the most powerful man in the world and how they might be circumvented. Gripping, powerful and only too believable. Don't miss it.
Out of the Dark takes the reader on a journey that covers a wide range of emotions from potential love to outright terror. The relentless action and detailed mission planning make the tale both clever and smart. It's only the end of January, but this novel will be remembered as one of the best thrillers of the year
Out of the Dark is the best thing Gregg Hurwitz has ever written and the kind of game-changing thriller that'll have people talking about it long after turning the final page.
The perfect thriller
A superbly created page-turning action blast
The fourth in a series that has put Hurwitz firmly on the thriller writers' map
Orphan X is most exciting new series character since Jack Reacher. A page-turning masterpiece of suspense (Jonathan Kellerman)
Mind blowing! A perfect mix of Jason Bourne and Jack Reacher (Lisa Gardner)
Orphan X is the most exciting thriller I've read since The Bourne Identity ... A new thriller superstar is born! (Robert Crais)
A new series character to rival Reacher . . . anyone reading Orphan X won't be surprised that a cadre of peers, from Tess Gerritsen to Lee Child, have lined up to praise it

If you like your Jason bourne style ex assassin with a heart style you will love Evan Smoak. To compare hin to Jason though is unfair as he is way more complex way more brutal but goodness there is so much emotion in these books. Who would of thought you could tear up listening to this type of book. I can only finish by saying Mr Hurwitz is nothing short of genius putting other authors of this genre in the shade . Buy the first book in the series and by the time you reach this one you’ll be desperate for number five.. which actually is out early next year ! Please keep Evan going is all I can say!

Outstanding!

The best of the Orphan X books yet. Gregg Hurwitz has really hit his straps with the fourth in the series of orphan x books, the hitman with a heart. He raises the stakes in this novel trying to best the US president and other Orphans whilst doing his day job as the nowhere man. These books are simply brought to life by Scott Brick whose narration is the most gripping, moving joyful experience any audiobook narrator has performed. I don’t know if there are Oscars for what he does but there should be because in the Orphan X novels in general and Out of the Dark in particular, his performance is masterful.

Hurwitz and Brick a Magical Combination

I have read the previous Smoak books and enjoyed them but this is a bit samey. As soon as the bad orphan was killed off, another pops up just the same.
Narration was ok but he often swallows or whispers the last couple of words in a sentence making it difficult to listen to last thing at night.

Good but not so good

I’ll start by stating... it’s not the best in the series, but it’s still a fantastic listen. As always, Gregg hits all the spots with his description and pacing and Scott Brick nails it as always.

Excellent Listen
