About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Every life is both ordinary and extraordinary, and Logan Mountstuart's - stretching across the twentieth century - is a rich tapestry of both. As a writer who finds inspiration with Hemingway in Paris and Virginia Woolf in London, as a spy recruited by Ian Fleming and betrayed in the war, and as an art-dealer in '60s New York, Logan mixes with the men and women who shape his times. But as a son, friend, lover and husband, he makes the same mistakes we all do in our search for happiness. Here, then, is the story of a life lived to the full - and a journey deep into a very human heart.

This is a glorious story; tragedy, wit, romance, top swearing, it has it all. Love it.

I haven't been as affected by a book since reading House of Doors. The whole thing is sensational from beginning to end. the characters are rich, flawed and engaging. I could not stop listening. almost perfect.

a masterpiece

It’s left me thinking about many human hearts that touch our own heart and bring good & bad luck and make us behave in completely different ways. LMS was heartbroken but in death found love again 🩵💜🧡

A compelling, beautifully written and read book. I feel bereft at having come to the end of William Boyd’s account of a life.

Completely transporting.
