About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Drifters in search of work, George and simple-minded friend Lennie have nothing in the world except each other - and a dream. A dream that one day they will have some land of their own. Eventually they find work on a ranch, but their hopes are doomed as Lennie - struggling against extreme cruelty, misunderstanding and jealousy - becomes a victim of his own strength.

Tackling universal themes, friendship and a shared vision, and giving a voice to America's lonely and dispossessed, Of Mice and Men remains Steinbeck's most popular work.

I didn't study this at school and didn't think I'd missed much from not having read such a classic, but oh my goodness, I understand why it's such an iconic piece of English literature.

The narrative voice and delivery was perfect! I struggle with narrators as they can sometimes upset the tone and monotonous ly deplete the storyline but this narrator neither distracted nor diminished the effect, he delivered it with all the rawness it needed. His particular portrayal of Lennie stood out.

Thoroughly enjoyed this!!

Riveting and emotionally immersive

I don't know how this classic passed me by. it short but powerful. The narration does it justice and brings the words to life.

Very moving!

what a story.. a love story.. a story about hope.. the human condition..they had no chance, because of elements in the personality.. life is so hard if you are very poor..the dream shatters.. certainly worth reading and listening.. it will stay with me

what a story

This short book about the intertwined relationship of two friends is one that I wished I had read before now.
Having just finished listening, I wish I had more time to reflect on the story in order to offer a review which does justice to the excellent writing - and narration where the different characters come to life, thrown together working as ranch hands, all wary of the temptations of the bored sole female character who’s loneliness drives her towards them and contributes to her downfall. There is violence and passion and at the end compassion manifested by George, such a faithful friend to the vulnerable childlike Lenny.

A great classic

I knew how it would end but I didn’t want it to end. A powerful and heartwarming tale of love and protection.
