About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This lush, lyrical fantasy is Steinbeck's sole work of historical fiction. Henry Morgan ruled the Spanish Main in the 1670s, ravaging the coasts of Cuba and America and striking terror wherever he went. His lust and greed knew no bounds, and he was utterly consumed by two passions; to possess the mysterious woman known as La Santa Roja, the Red Saint, and to conquer Panama and wrest 'the cup of gold' from Spanish hands.

An absolute classic. Excellent story and superbly narrated by Ronan Vibert. Not a subject I thought I would enjoy, but I loved it. Highly recommended.

After years of sitting on my bookcase I’ve undertaken the task of listening to every book that I own but have never read . I’m almost done now , in fact I think this is the last one that’s available on audible .
What a brilliant book this is , a hidden treasure . The performance is outstanding as well .
You will not be disappointed.

A treasure indeed !

I’m glad some have found this a good swashbuckling tale but I have found it dreadful nonsense. I realise it’s Steinbeck’s first book and has interest on that basis. Whether it’s at all useful as a record of Morgan’s life I’ve no idea. The narrator is generally good but I had to speed it up to 1.1x as it is painfully slow, especially when he assumes Merlin’s voice, and the slow, rasping Welsh accents are a bit overdone. I live in the area where Morgan came from and I never meet anyone around here who sounds like a worn-out Richard Burton narrating Under Milk Wood.

Mostly unbearable
