About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Anna Popplewell, best known for her leading role as Susan Pevensie in The Chronicles of Narnia films. This definitive recording includes an Introduction by Stevie Davies.

Orphaned Jane Eyre grows up in the home of her heartless aunt, where she endures loneliness and cruelty, and at a charity school with a harsh regime. This troubled childhood strengthens Jane's natural independence and spirit - which prove necessary when she finds a position as governess at Thornfield Hall. But when she finds love with her sardonic employer, Rochester, the discovery of his terrible secret forces her to make a choice. Should she stay with him and live with the consequences, or follow her convictions, even if it means leaving the man she loves? A novel of intense power and intrigue, Jane Eyre (1847) dazzled and shocked readers with its passionate depiction of a woman's search for equality and freedom.

Very easy to listen to this. I’m a huge fan but still cried, laughed and loved to follow the story

Excellently read. I wouldn’t have changed one thing. I read Jane Eyre a couple of years ago and this reading has done it even more justice. Five stars!

Excellent!

This was such a fluent listen. I have read it before but listening to this reading was pure pleasure.

Anna Popplewel reads very well, she has a pleasant voice. And she doesn’t just read, she plays a real performance, her voice changes depending on the character.

The narrator's voice is wonderful.

DO NOT listen to the introduction as it immediately gives away every detail of the story. The narrator has a strong clear voice, and she is very good with the Northen accents. The sound quality is excellent. The narrator isn’t a perfect match for this classic story but at least you can hear what she is saying which is much better than in some other Jane Eyre audiobooks. It is a great story and not at all depressing. Jane is a very likeable passionate person who often encounters good and kind people. The story is full of Christian wisdom. My favourite part of the story is Jane’s time in Morton. This is the kind of audiobook that you can listen to over and over again.

A wonderful story
