Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Gemma Whelan, best known for her roles in Game of Thrones, Gentleman Jack and Upstart Crow. This definitive recording includes an Introduction by Patricia Ingham.

When her father leaves the Church, Margaret Hale is uprooted from her comfortable home in Hampshire to move with her family to the North of England. Initially repulsed by the ugliness of her new surroundings in the industrial town of Milton, Margaret becomes aware of the poverty and suffering of local mill workers and develops a passionate sense of social justice.

In North and South Gaskell skillfully fused individual feeling with social concern and in Margaret Hale created one of the mostoriginal heroines of Victorian literature.

Without a doubt the best North and South reading

I do so hope Gemma Whelan records more Elizabeth Gaskell - her characterisation is wonderful and she convincingly captures the the full spectrum of an emotional rollercoaster novel.

Great characters and story accompanied by a expressive narrator.

I loved every minute of it. I like the story in general as I had read it before and Gemma Whelan’s voice and imitation of accents were really a great pleasure to listen to.

The narration really makes this audiobook

The classic North and South novel needs no defence, it is a thought-provoking yet enjoyable story and Gemma Whelan’s narration really brings it to life. Clear and crisp, with sympathetic accents and suitable voice adaptations for different characters, I thoroughly recommend this audible version of the novel.

Didn’t like the narration

Narration not great at all. Full stops often missed completely and the wrong emphasis placed on words making sentences confusing. Often the wrong word is said, “interpreted” instead of “interrupted” for example and words are missed out.
