Critic reviews

The psychotherapist’s guide to raising happy, healthy children is one of the most practical and genuinely useful books out there. Warm and judgement-free, every parent should read this book
It is like a letter from a wise friend who happens to have done years of research (...) I am grateful for it
Made me think about me and who I am and my parents and who they are and maybe, hopefully, one day what sort of parent I might strive to be
I've had the most wonderful feedback from this episode. People stopping me on the street to say how much they've love the book's advice. Philippa's wisdom and delivery has resonated with many parents out there. I can't thank her enough for her time and energy (Fearne Cotton)
I don't have kids but [this book] is a fascinating read on the emotional baggage we all carry
The Easter holidays were a complete joy because of your book - I feel about a trillion times more relaxed and connected as a parent and I have also found it very helpful for my sobriety and recovery
A fascinating insight into how the way you were brought up impacts your relationships with your children and partner, and how to manage the needs of children while showing compassion to yourself
EVERY parent should read this book, however old their child. In fact, any adult in a relationship should read it too. Distilled in less than 250 pages is a road map to healthy relationships. Required reading
Not got kids? It doesn't matter, as the wonderful psychotherapist Philippa Perry's latest book is actually about using our pasts to understand ourselves (...) it's also an excellent book for reminding yourself: life is hard and you're doing your best - so try not to beat yourself up for everyday mistakes
So clear and true ... can't stop recommending it to people ... helpful for all relationships in life, not just parent-child

This is a great book with a lot of great advice but the author (who is also the narrator) puts on these weird voices when reading the parts where children are speaking. There is no need to put on these weird over the top cartoonish kids voices. completely takes away from a great audiobook.

Great book - annoying when doing kids voices

My son had issues that earned his parents a spot in a course called "Circle of Security". I recognised a LOT of the material and the book delivers it in a great way - much better than the course. I finally "get" it.

Lots of examples. It takes a bit of concentration to use the techniques described in the book but I have managed a few times and it really makes a difference. Previously, if my son was upset about something, I might have tried to point out positive aspects of a situation and thus communicate to him that bad feelings must be avoided. Now I know to respect his feelings and help him describe them. It feels unnatural to me, but it does help.

Glad I read it - Wish I had read it before!

One of the best books I read so far. I just finished it and plat to read it again. I cannot recommend it enough to all the parents out there, but also to all adults who want to understand better what patterns (good or bad) they took from their parents.

This is by far one of the best books I read so far

Super and clear advice for practical points and with great insight - well written and concise
The narration is a little soporific but a great book and I only regret not reading it sooner

Great advice instantly implemented
