Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Devastatingly perceptive, savagely funny and wildly original - the essential coming-of-age story for our times. With the deadpan wit of Fleabag and ruthless insight of Cat Person, Lara Williams tells a tale of rage and joy, hunger and friendship, bodies and the space they take up in the world.

Twenty-nine year old Roberta has spent her whole life hungry - until the day she invents Supper Club.

Supper Club is a secret society for hungry women. Women who are sick of bad men and bad sex, of hinted expectations to talk less, take less, be less. So they gather after dark and feast until they are sick. They drink and dance and roar. And, month by month, their bodies expand.

At the centre of the Supper Club stands Roberta - cynical yet anxious, precocious and lost. She is seeking the answer to a simple question: if you feed a starving woman, what will she grow into?

This is a story about the hunger that never goes away. And it is a story about the people who make us what we are - who lead us astray and ultimately save us. You look hungry. Join the club.

loved it

This is a wonderful, juicy and original novel. It is relevant to our times and describes the subtleties of anxiety with grace and accuracy.

Incredible audiobook!

I listen to multiple audiobooks each week and this is the best one I've listen to in months. Fabulous book brilliantly narrated. Loved it so much I am buying the book as well as I want to pass it to friends.

Frustrating

Overlong supper club is unbalanced in endless depictions of boring relationships with boyfriends. Not enough exploration of female interaction. Not enough supper club. A good writer missing her mark.

A painting of the human experience

Williams redefines the way we take up space, in our bodies, our personality, our inner most thoughts and our relationships. Her brutal description and bold inquiry made this book feel like a theatre of relativity and estrangement. What a literary treat!

Made me fall in love with food again

I struggled reading this physically but listening to it was a different experience. The description of food and love is so visceral and real and captivating i never wanted it to end.

Not to my taste

The main character was difficult to understand and fairly selfish and depressing. Too many threads of story and most of them not explored to any really satisfying conclusions.

For a specific taste

For those who love to cook/bake and also want a story. Struggle to finish.

Irritating narration

The narrator for this book was so incredibly irritating! It drove me crazy that she kept inconsistently dropping her ts and had a completed affected way of speaking. There was no narrative reason to explain this vague attempt at a London accent, and I can’t imagine that the book is written this way. Therefore I don’t understand why the narrator decided to do this. It became so distracting.

The book itself has some interesting themes, but it didn’t feel fully formed.

Unappetising!

Could not finish this! To be honest, I think I misunderstood what sort of book this was going to be; I expected an entertainingly transgressive celebration of women breaking free from the conditioning of society to unashamedly enjoy the physical pleasures of life. Actually it’s quite whiny and depressing. I repeatedly and unreasonably had the urge to shout, “Pull yourself together, woman!” Too boring.
