 1999年、台湾に日本の新幹線が走ることになり、入社4年目の商社員、多田春香は現地への出向が決まった。春香には忘れられない思い出があった。台湾を旅した学生時代、よく知らないまま一日を一緒に過ごした青年がいた。連絡先をなくし、それ以後ずっと会えないままだった……。

台湾と日本の仕事のやり方の違いに翻弄される日本人商社員、車輛工場の建設をグアバ畑の中から眺めていた台湾人学生、台湾で生まれ育ち終戦後に日本に帰ってきた日本人老人、そして日本に留学し建築士として日本で働く台湾人青年。

それぞれをめぐる深いドラマが台湾新幹線の着工から開業までの大きなプロジェクトに絡んでゆく。政治では問題を抱えていても、日本と台湾の間にしっかりと育まれた個人の絆を、台湾の風土とともに色鮮やかに描く渾身の力作。
