Ichiro Tatsumi
Orthopedic doctor. A leading expert in knee surgery. Born in 1960. After graduating from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Shizuoka Prefectural University of Pharmaceutical Sciences, he entered the School of Medicine at Osaka City University. During his fourth year in the Faculty of Pharmacy, he suffered severe injuries in a motorcycle accident and hovered between life and death; spurred on by his late father’s words, “Do what you truly love,” he graduated from the Faculty of Pharmacy and subsequently entered the School of Medicine at Osaka City University.
After graduation, he joined the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the university’s affiliated hospital, where he spent his days immersed in surgery. During this time, he studied at the Mayo Clinic in the United States and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, mastering the world’s most advanced techniques. Through the development of “minimally invasive” knee replacement surgery—which avoids cutting muscles and minimizes incision size—and the proactive adoption of “hemi-arthroplasty” to minimize physical strain on the body, he has established himself as one of Japan’s leading experts. His patient-centered approach attracts a steady stream of patients from across the country. While renowned for his surgical skill, he has also gained attention as a doctor who “doesn’t rush to operate.” Believing that “surgery is a last resort,” he proposes his own original joint-preservation methods and works alongside patients every day to find solutions. After serving as Director of the Knee Replacement Center at Shonan Kamakura General Hospital for 15 years, he became Director of the Joint Replacement Center at Ichinomiya Nishi Hospital in 2020.
