Mark P. Witton is a visiting researcher at the University of Portsmouth, UK, where he also obtained his PhD in 2008. He is a palaeontological author, artist, and researcher best known for his work on pterosaurs and his contributions to palaeoart: the evidence-led restoration of extinct organisms in drawings, paintings, sculpture, and film. His research interests are the functional morphology and ecology of flying reptiles, the life appearance of extinct animals, and the history of palaeoartistry. He is the author and illustrator of dozens of scientific papers on these topics as well as seven books, including Pterosaurs: Natural History, Evolution, Anatomy (2013, Princeton University Press), The Palaeoartist’s Handbook (2018, Crowood Press), The Art and Science of the Crystal Palace Dinosaurs (2022, Crowood Press; coauthored with Ellinor Michel), King Tyrant: a Natural History of Tyrannosaurus rex (2025, Princeton University Press) and Spinosaur Tales (2025, Bloomsbury Sigma, coauthored with David Hone). Alongside his writing, he works as a palaeoartist for museums and universities and a consultant for film and TV. Among his clients are the BBC, National Geographic, Royal Mail, and the Royal Mint. His artwork has appeared in London’s Natural History Museum, the American Museum of Natural History, Yale Peabody Museum, and Chicago’s Field Museum. He has been a concept artist and consultant for the acclaimed Apple TV series Prehistoric Planet and the Walking with Dinosaurs franchise.
