Katherine D. Van Schaik is a faculty member in the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, with an additional appointment in the Department of Classical and Mediterranean Studies at Vanderbilt University. She received her PhD in Ancient History from the Harvard Department of the Classics and her MD from Harvard Medical School, upon completing studies in Classics and Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard College, and in Classical Art and Archaeology at King's College, University of London. Study of health and disease, past and present, has taken her to hospitals, universities, libraries, and crypts around the world. As a radiologist, she’s thrilled that she can do what Galen could not, and peer inside living human bodies through tools like X-rays, ultrasound, and MRI—and sometimes, she even takes these tools into crypts and catacombs to take X-ray images of historical remains, gaining further insight into the lives of the people who lived in the past.
