J. R. Cleveland writes Westerns, a line of work that pays about what cowboying did and is easier on the back. His books are about men who owe money they can’t pay, carry pistols they oughtn’t, and ride a long way to settle things that would have been better left alone. Most of them are funny, at least until somebody gets shot, and in his books somebody generally does. He makes the people up. He takes the country and the history as he finds them, being of the opinion that the real West was hard enough without improving on it.
