I was schooled in Yorkshire, in Hull, York, Scarborough and all stops in between, then studied Maths and Physics and lots of other stuff at Cambridge. Before ordination, I had a holiday job giving change in an amusement arcade on Scarborough’s foreshore, worked in Barclays Bank in central Hull for six years and taught Ancient Greek. I have served as a parish priest in urban and rural parishes in Yorkshire, worked with two Archbishops of York as their chaplain, as well as advising and selecting those considering priesthood. From 2009-2107, i was a bishop in South Wales for eight years, working amongst fantastic folk in Cardiff, the Vale of the Glamorgan and the wonderful Valleys, taking my cue from Officer Crabtree in ’Allo ’Allo, trying to get my tongue around the local language! Since 2017 I have been a bishop assisting John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, in my home diocese. The greatest privilege of ministry is getting alongside all sorts of folk, and being there both for their joys and sorrows and all stops in between. I have enjoyed writing all my life, and my books catch the humour, quirkiness and poignancy of all the great Yorkshire characters I have chanced upon. Shepherd of another Flock, my latest book, records my first year in the lovely market town of Helmsley, when I was sent to do an Alex Polizzi and get the place shipshape after an unfortunate episode. The year was 1997, and the book describes no less than 55 larger-than-life characters, most of whom had seen significant service in the War. Sadly, a couple of years later and they were all gone, so I caught them just in time. In March 2019, my former boss, Archbishop Habgood died, which spurred me on to complete his biography, Just John, which will be published by SPCK in March 2020. His was an amazing life, a former Cambridge scientist who conducted research on the transmission of pain in frogs’ legs and on his own arm! His brain was gigabyte to my kilobyte, and as Archbishop of York his tremendous wit and wisdom kept the Church steady, holding together traditionalists and radicals when the first women were ordained priest in 1994. It was the Church of England’s version of Brexit, and he John fixed it!
