Forty years in the NHS - man and boy. I am still working, albeit part time, as a consultant geriatrician and stroke physician on the south coast of England. I am interested in how modern medicine seems to have lost its way especially with excessive investigation and treatment of the very frail and elderly close to the end of their natural lives. Too much medicine and too little helping people and their families gain a realistic vision of old age and dying. I want everyone at the age of seventy to discuss and document what medical interventions they would be willing to accept over their next decade or so of life. I have worked in the UK, the Canadian prairies, India, Ghana and briefly in the old USSR. I am a Londoner at heart and am still half in love with the place. I like swimming in the sea and drinking beer but not simultaneously. I may be found on Saturday afternoons down The Den supporting Millwall. My medical interests are transient ischaemic attacks and the prevention of dementia. I am on Instagram (drdavidjarrett) and Twitter (@DavidJarrettd). There is a YouTube talk from Conway Hall - Thinking On Sunday 'We Need To Talk About Death.' and a YouTube video "How not to get dementia.' Check out a discussion with author Lionel Shriver on BBC Sounds 'Start the Week.' My email address is jarrettd@doctors.org.uk. I am happy to talk on end of life decisions in the elderly, dementia prevention, the history of stroke disease, biological ageing or other topics covered in 33 Meditation on Death. I also write children's books and fiction but as yet not published.
