Hi, I’m Alastair Wells. I used to think collecting degrees was a sensible hobby — molecular biology, virology, genetic engineering, and then, for reasons I still don’t fully understand, a PhD in mathematical modeling and economics. (It seemed like a good idea at the time. It wasn’t.) My father was an English teacher and a traveling storyteller, which means I grew up knowing two things: words are powerful, and airports are confusing. So really, writing science fiction and fantasy was less a choice and more a cosmic inevitability. These days, I live on a dead-end dirt road that feels suspiciously like the universe’s way of saying, “You’ve gone far enough.” I share it with a dog, a cat, a couple of curious children, my heroic partner, and the occasional stray flightless bird who looks like it’s lost a bet with evolution. It’s a good life — if you ignore the birds plotting something in the bushes.
