About this listen

Red: Lázhien’s human. A common Imperial soldier. And my soulmate. How could fate get it so wrong? The demon in me craves this bond with every shred of his being. He pushes me to accept it. This time I won’t yield to his demands.

Lázhien: Red’s a lust demon, a whore and a stuck-up snob. The most beautiful man I’ve ever seen. Pain in the arse. And he hates my guts. I’d be an idiot to pursue him. Yet something about him compels me to make him mine.

When I First Saw Red is a complete and stand-alone short novel with an HEA ending, featuring a couple of reluctant fated soulmates - a demon and a human - trying and failing to defy destiny.

An half elf, half incubus with low self worth and a human connects in a brothel. What a unique way to discover your soul mate. Two completely opposite persons whom wants nothing to do with each other yet can't ignore the pull of their impending bond. This is a unique world that Kasia Bacon built with some exquisite characters and it intrigued and kept my attention the entire time. This is a beautiful fated mates novella that I adore. Cornell Collins narration was very enjoyable as well, my only issue was his female voice, that requires some work.

Steamy, broken, and beautiful love story!

WIFSR is short and taut but imparts lots of magic and whimsy and fantasy. Ms Bacon wrote affecting and mature protagonists with a deft hand, smarts, imagination and hands down sexiness. WIFSR rewards the attentive listener as the world and atmosphere created here is subtly conveyed in ‘blink and you might miss it’ detail. Wit and humour keep the internal monologuing entertaining 😊. Shifting gears, the Epilogue speaks to the character growth of one of the main protagonists, ending the story in a supremely satisfying way.

🎧 Cornell Collins narrated with nuanced gravitas. The story needed lightness for the humour and very likeable cast of characters, but, without triteness to effectively communicate the weightier themes of abandonment, rejection, bereavement, insecurity, the fear of failing, healing, companionship and Okkano’s ‘self-worth’ arc. Mr Collins had material here that was worthy of his talent. With WIFSR he also had the rare opportunity to showcase his comedic timing. This novella is such a pleasure!

I’m not always convinced there’s one perfect person for everyone in the world. That these two people are destined to find each other, fall in love, and live happily ever after. Does that make me a cynic or a realist? I’m not sure.

All that being said, Red and Lázhien are definitely meant to be together. Except that doesn’t make sense. Talk about opposites attract. Neither will fit neatly in the other’s world. And yet…try as they might, those feelings of rightness cannot be ignored. In Ms. Bacon’s world, the two halves of a whole are not what one would imagine. Which is what makes this book so compelling. I enjoyed it and plan to keep listening to every audiobook she puts out.

Quick note about narrator Cornell Collins. I love his work and he’s the perfect fit for this book. I look forward to more collaborations with the narrator/author combo.

Fated Mates

Cornell Collins narrates this so well. Each of the voices are distinctive so there's no mixing up pov's whilst listening. I also enjoy the inflections put on some of the sentences. It makes for a great listen.
Story wise, there's a lot of heat and they deny their bond to begin with but once they get together? The sweetness!
Oh and the epilogue was utterly adorable and made me laugh and smile throughout.
loved it

Surprisingly sweet

This is a wonderful book that packs a punch of both steam and sweetness and interesting and detailed world building. I loved both the MCs, both seperate and together, they proved complex and genuinely likeable. The supporting cast was also interesting and likeable.

Cornell Collins is the perfect narrator for this book, both MCs were spot on in his voice.

I also liked the language of the book, it’s descriptive, both to the point and flourishing at the same time, and very easy on the ears. This book is high heat, low angst, and interesting plot and I’ll be sure to check out more of this author’s work in the furure.
