About this listen

Paddington station, nine a.m., rush hour. As the crowds ebb and flow, time suddenly stands still for two people: Fern and Elliott, ex-lovers who parted 25 years before and never expected to see each other again. But here they are, face to face, and the connection is as powerful as it was the day they first met. Their lives have moved on - to marriage, children and divorce - yet neither has stopped regretting the day that drove them apart. Fern gives Elliott her number and they tentatively arrange to meet again that evening when both will be travelling back through the station. And, as the day ticks on, and the memories resurface, both Fern and Elliott reflect on the past. As their emotions go round in circles, so does the Paddington clock, counting down the minutes to eight p.m. - and the moment the future is in their hands.

Critic reviews

"A genuine contender for the crown of this year's One Day" Louise Candlish, author of The Day You Saved My Life.
"Beautifully written, with perfect form and pace. Fern and Elliott's vivid emotional journey will stay with me" Hilary Boyd, author of Thursdays in the Park.

I liked the idea and the suspense, but as I checked how long was left on the audio book I realised it wasn't going to end the way I'd expected and hoped, I felt a bit let down. The narrator was great, idea great, ending was lacking.

It just ended without a satisfying conclusion

The writing was good in parts and the narrator was good but the book was too long and the last part of the book was a dismal failure.

A bit of a let down

Any additional comments?

Two people meet by chance years after they separated. Over the course of the day we learn about their lives. It is quite a gentle unfolding, but never really went anywhere.
A good book to read on short journeys. It got a bit samey, and some of the characters seemed to be introduced for no particular reason.

A slow paced story.

Felt let down by the ending and the gloom of the situation setting!characters had no real grit and conversations in their heads were boring .. would not recommend!

Something and nothing !
