This is the 2nd book in the Blackwood institute series and it starts were book 1 ends so Twisted Heathens must be read or listened to first.
I can honestly say I have never listened to a story quite like this before,It has made me question myself,because am I supposed to enjoy a story that can be so disturbing at times.?
I found myself feeling uncomfortable sometimes too,but I could not tear myself away from this story,because it is intriguing and captivating..I have to know how ALL of this will end.
Blackwood Institute is a hideous place for the mentally ill,which has a sinister side and drives the patients to the edge...Augustus is a psychopath and there is a twist that is shocking about who else is involved with his sordid plans for the patients.
We are back with Brooklyn and her guys Kade,Hudson,Eli and Phoenix..they have become a unit a family..they share a bond emotionally and sexually and sometimes it is destructive.
But their little family is breaking and they are trying to fix it after the Brooklyn incident with Rio in book 1..This book is the aftermath of that event.
We learn more about the characters and their backgrounds and what brought them to Blackwood..
They ALL suspect something BAD is happening at Blackwood and a new threat is put in place making the patients lives HELL...Protecting eachother is becoming difficult.
You really do fall in love with these characters,I felt empathy with them all Kade wants to save everyone,His brother Hudson can be a brute he is always angry,Phoenix is confident and sure of who he is a bit of a playboy but that changes in this book,Eli is MUTE after what his father did to him and I wanted to just Hug him.
Brooklyn is the woman who they are all obsessed with she has history with Hudson and her past is full of abuse until one day she had had enough and did something that landed her into this cycle of being institutionalised.I have grown to have affection for all of them despite what they have done...
I think I must be unhinged because honestly this story has some triggers for me,but I listened to it anyway and I did find some scenes really hard for me to digest,as this story does take a sinister turn and it is painful and emotional to hear.
The Narration by Bridget Bordeaux and Grant Armstrong is Fantastic it must have been difficult for them to read some of this and they are just Amazing portraying the characters in this story.They both give a passionate disturbing performance for us to get lost in..Because you will become enthralled with their storytelling and the dark depraved story of Blackwood Institute.
J.Rose's mind must be very warped..lol..I mean no offence when I say that because she has written a very engrossing series.
I enjoyed listening to this Audiobook.

Although the series' are standalone, I knew some of Brooklyn's backstory from the Sabre Security books which I have read previously but not the details. The twists and turns still got me and I was not prepared for those last few chapters with Bridget Bordeaux doing an amazing performance at this part. Both narrators have a lot of heavy lifting to do as there are some really bleak moments as just when think humans can't be any worse to each other, you're proven wrong. It's an emotional listen with some real sucker punches along the way.
Nix and Eli's development was my highlight though; Nix in particular has a great arc and I liked the exploration of how betrayed he felt by Brooklyn's choices in the last book rather than glossing over it. My heart broke for Hudson and Kade too in different ways as they have to deal with some major consequences orchestrated by Kade's father. I'm hoping there is some vengeance heading his way in book three!
My interpretation of the star system;
3 stars - I enjoyed it; would read the author again
4 stars - I really liked it; I am invested and definitely want more from this author/series
5 stars - I loved it; I engaged with this book completely until I finished it and it is one I will re-read
