  • The charming revival of Victorian cloches with Beth Gregg - Episode 171
    May 9 2024

The Victorian era gave the horticultural world one of the most charming designs for the cloche, or cold frame - a charm that’s being renewed by the wonderful Beth Gregg.

Arthur Parkinson hails Beth as the ‘Goddess of Cloches’ through her faithful revival of those original designs with Claverton Cloches.

In this week’s ‘grow, cook, eat, arrange’, learn what earns the cloche its spot in any garden, and how Beth breathes new life into an oft-overlooked apparatus.

    In this episode, discover:

    • Beth’s embrace of Victorian cloche design, and how Claverton Cloches channelled the charm of that era
    • Why cloches are wonderful for protecting seedlings from not only harsh temperatures, but brisk winds
    • The inspiration for Claverton’s different designs, and exciting future with their new garden hose
    • Beth’s appearance at this year’s Chelsea Flower Show, sharing the joys of her handiwork

  • Our 30 Year legacy at Perch Hill with Adam Nicolson - Episode 170
    May 2 2024

The 4th of May marks a very special day at Perch Hill, particularly this year - it’s 30 years since Sarah and Adam first arrived and started making history here.

Perch Hill looks so vastly different to how it began in 1994, as it’s taken shape over the decades, and in this week’s ‘grow, cook, eat, arrange’ Sarah & Adam share stories from their time here so far, the many phases that Perch Hill has seen, and how the garden in particular has developed.

    In this episode, learn:

    • How Sarah discovered Perch Hill, and the charming experiences that endeared Adam to it
    • The state in which Sarah & Adam found the garden, and first steps towards bringing it to life in the way that we all know and love today
    • Balancing abundance with structure, and chaos with tidiness through a lens of biodiversity

wonderful

I am a keen gardener and enjoy both propagating for the garden and cut flowers as well as for growing for the kitchen garden feeding my other love cooking, so for me this podcast is an obvious choice. I have followed Sarah Raven for years and follow much the same ethos with nature and gardening. I love the easy conversation and readily absorb all the tips and ideas,
You almost feel part of the conversation. I keep chickens, alpacas and ponies too and so with Arthurs perspective as well, it is just wholly entertaining and educational. I very often listen using my phone on loud speaker while I am gardening or mucking out, learning and laughing while I work... Please Please keep it going.
