About this listen

When Catherine Morland, a country clergyman's daughter, is invited to spend a season in Bath with the fashionable high society, little does she imagine the delights and perils that await her. Captivated and disconcerted by what she finds, and introduced to the joys of "Gothic novels" by her new friend, Isabella, Catherine longs for mystery and romance. When she is invited to stay with the beguiling Henry Tilney and his family at Northanger Abbey, she expects mystery and intrigue at every turn. However, the truth turns out to be even stranger than fiction.

I first read Northanger Abbey as a teenager and, although I loved the book, I didn't quite get the satire. Revisiting it now, with Juliet Stevenson's perfect narration, I see the book in another light but still enjoy it. Translate the heroine's obsession with Gothic novels into today's obsession with celebrities and their lifestyle and you have a very modern story.

Perfect Austen

Thoroughly enjoyable rendition of this Jane Austen classic, by Juliet Stevenson. Read in a smooth, engaging way, with excellent character parts. Particularly enjoyed the comic characters performed with farce relish!

Classic tale, excellently narrated!

The description of the characters allowing a cLear understanding of their individual outlooks and , for some, limitations of their interest in the people around them.

The expression and use of language of Jane Austin

I didn't enjoy the book as much as I thought. I found there to be just too much silliness by the women/girls. Although Catherine does show a strength of character part way through by her defiance of her friends, I felt she still was just a little too silly by the end of the book.

It definitely could have been longer and the ending more filled out the it was. Also there was a very strange ranting by Austen in the early to middle part about authors and the merits versus hers. Maybe more research into it would explain it but it was rather odd and felt out of place.

I will probably give this another listen at some point, If only to enjoy Juliet Stevenson's performance again as it is excellent.

Not quite as good as expected

Ok, I wasn't a big fan of the story when I read it first but I think it changed I listened to this audiobook. I enjoyed it immensely and Juliet Stevenson is the best narrator ever. Thank you Ms Stevenson for the well nuanced reading. At first like others I did feel that Catherine sounded a bit too childish but she sounded more mature as the story progressed and her growth of character with exposure to the world around her.
Just a note, the chapters are wrong , they are combined together. But the book is whole, no issue there and worked well as whisper sync.

My favourite Narrator, brought the story alive
