Summary

Maria Bamford is a creative genius. But the process of creating is not something that “comes easily” or “is enjoyable” for her. So, over the years, she’s invented a number of helpful techniques for tricking, shaming, coercing herself into doing things. You Are (A Comedy) Special is 15-step comedic send up of a self help guide that examines Maria’s approach to stand-up in a hilarious fashion. So if you’ve ever found yourself alphabetizing your cans of soup instead of, oh, writing that screenplay, you might find this book interesting. Or at least an entertaining distraction from that tough soup-alphabetizing work. YOUR ACTION - Start listening now!

Witty and wise

A witty, warm-hearted, tightly-woven and inspiring guide to tackling any creative project or just plain being a person while putting anxiety and self-doubt in perspective. I loved it, laughed a lot and will be re-listening for years to come.

Bamford is an original and hillarious motivator

I mean it's Maria Bamford so you know it's gonna be funny. What's nice is seeing her have a project that focuses on the comforting and motivating aspects of her style and voice. As someone with crippling mental disorders who occasionally dreams of doing standup when life seems worthwhile, this was a fantastic and uplifting listen. Id recommend it to anyone struggling with anything.

Simple road map to get started in stand-up

Read this for guidance and encouragement in your (scary) adventure into comedy... if you only do a few parts of the 15 steps (especially writing an hour of material, and perform somewhere...anywhere!) ... you'll still be further on.... if your wheels come after after you have read this one, try Before and Laughter by Jimmy Carr.

Tremendous

This was an utter joy from beginning to end, and I highly recommend it. A touch exhausting, maybe, but still a joy.

funny

I thought it was funny not in a laugh out loud way, more of a humourous story kind of way.

Reassuring advice for procrastinators everywhere!

I am an openly enthusiastic Maria Bamford fan and like/love everything she does, that said, I think these words are a comfort to anyone who harbours a dream (no matter how modest) but just can't find the energy to start working on it. Maria shares her tips for fighting boredom and fear, how to use others to hold yourself accountable, and how to find the courage to just be your weird and wonderful self. Narrated in her signature style with a range of familiar voices and characters, I loved this funny and very human advice.

Loved it

Totally loved it! I always enjoy Maria's work. She has a unique voice in comedy and I always find what she has to say interesting. Wish she would do shows in Ireland!

Please use credits for actual comic writing advice

Embarrassingly self indulgent vanity project disguised by its title as a comedy writer's tool. A waste of a credit for anyone other than the author's therapist. I'm genuinely shocked at the nerve of this woman.

Not really for me but it improved my confidence!

I was looking for a more practical guide to starting your journey in stand up and only lasted about 10mins with this as it wasn’t really my kind of humour. I'm sure it would be well received by people who vibe with this sort of comedy. But that made me realise that no matter how bad some people think I am at standup, there will also be some people (maybe not even just my mum) who find it hilarious. "Funny" is subjective. So I’m just going to go ahead and have a go!
