Summary

Listeners will wipe their eyes and hold their breath in this "heartfelt" and "stellar" standalone romance from USA Today bestselling author Adriana Locke.

Falling in love is easy. Falling out of love is the hardest thing in the world. And Elin and Ty Whitt are terrible at it.

The first time the local basketball star smiled at Elin, she was a goner. It was just so damn easy to fall for the dark-haired hometown hero with his charming smile and strong, athletic build. Thousands of sleepy smiles, aimless drives down country roads, and squeaks of the backdoor after a swing shift later, reality hits.

And it hits hard.

Falling in love was definitely the easy part. Watching it break apart was impossible.

Through the tears, the second-guesses, the memories of a life built together, the world keeps spinning. With each turn comes clarity and hope—sometimes in the form of a pair of muddy boots by the back door or from the words of a wise friend.

When Ty shows back up with a newfound determination to put his family back together, Elin's torn between the fights of the past and the possibility of a new start. This is the man that holds her heart, the man she loves beyond anything else. But this is also the one person in the world that can cause her the most pain.

Life’s not always easy. Love’s not for the faint of heart. But with life comes lessons and Ty and Elin have the scars to prove it. But it's their love written in those scars that will hold them together...or break them apart.

Poignant and heartbreaking

This is a second chance romance between Ty and Elin. Seriously, get the tissues ready- you'll need them. In my mind, this story is split into 2 separate aspects- one, the romance between the two, where things that seemed irrevocably broken were healed with time and continuous work. As an avid romance reader, we all want the HEA but know that in real life, the HEA is never all smooth sailing so it's good to have that addressed- and especially given that Adriana Locke, who I am a huge fan of, is well known for her sweet romances, so this feels like a departure. The second aspect of the story is a look into coal mining as an occupation, although I think you could also kind of relate the kinds of emotions in this story to any dangerous occupation where your health or even life may be on the line. This was an especially though provoking story line and one I appreciated.

I did feel like overall, the romance felt a little superficial in that they were angry, on the brink of divorce one day and then back to normal another. Perhaps too fast. I know they were still in love with each other but their reconciliation after all the negative stuff, felt too rushed.

I intermixed reading the ebook with listening to the audiobook and enjoyed both ways. I liked Emma Wilder and Lance Greenfield's reading although I thought that LG, especially, felt a little more forced with feminine voices and even branching out to other male voices. EW has such a great grasp of voices so I enjoyed her reading a lot.

What a Journey!

Written in the Scars was a beautifully written story! It's not often we get a marriage in crisis book and see them fighting for their relationship. This audio had me all in my feelings as Elin and Tyler's once perfect relationship becomes shattered. I had no doubt that they were each other's end game forever. Their journey was a rollercoaster of intense emotions not only with them but within their friend circle. I did appreciate how Elin made Tyler work for the forgiveness and understanding and slowly they understood each other's side better. They had such an amazing tribe of friends / family supporting them and giving them some nudges in the right direction. Overall, A very enjoyable and moving listen and kept my interest throughout.

Narrated by Lance Greenfield and Emma Wilder - they were both easy to listen to and made me feel connected to the story. Emma's male voice has become one of my favorites.

Emotional & heartbreaking

Where do I begin? This book took me by surprise. I was not expecting my heart to hurt so much and this book to be so emotional. I was in tears for almost half the book! It has been a while since a book has really hung me out to dry like this one has. Adriana, I’m not sure what you are trying to do to me!!

I’ve finally collected myself, now I will try and leave a review that will do this book justice!

This book is about Ty and Elin were high school sweethearts and married 7 years after high school. You’d think they would have a perfect marriage with the white picket fence and a car full of children, but they don’t.. for from it actually! Things have gotten to the point where Ty has worked out and Elin feels like her husband’s a stranger to her now. They are miserable.

After some time and talking, Ty finally comes home and is willing to put work into the marriage and do whatever it takes to make it work. He loves his wife more than anything. But is it too late? He was nowhere to be seen when Elin needed him the most and it’s not as simple as forgiving him. He may have to accept the fact he’s lost the love of his life forever.

Oh my god, this book played with my heartstrings. My heart ached so much for these two. I just wanted to climb into the book and hug them both! I haven’t read many romances where the couple are already married and having marriage problems, so this was a nice change! It hit home a lot as I struggle with infertility and I remember the heartache and the stress that comes with it.

This story and this relationship was not an easy one. Once you start this book, you will not want to put it down, and when you do, you won’t stop thinking about it until you pick it back up again. It CONSUMED me and I loved every word.

I can’t recommend this book enough!!

Fight for your love

Elin and Ty were made for each other. They were and still are madly in love. But they're going through a rough spot. So much so this is definitely a marriage in trouble trope kinda book. It's hard to read and I shed a tear or 5. the audio was amazing and I didn't realise how much I would love this.

Exceptional performances from the narrators

I’m used to this author’s lighthearted romcoms which I love but the angsty Written in the Scars has blown me away. Opening with a prologue that was so sweet and innocent, I had no idea the pain and heartbreak that lay ahead of the young Elin and Whit.

This was an emotional and beautifully written story of just how easily even the strongest marriage between two high school sweethearts can fall apart when they stop communicating. How something can escalate so much that one of them sees no option but to leave. Even though it’s obvious they still love each other, for Elin love without trust is nothing until it takes a tragedy for her to see that she nearly lost that second chance right in front of her. Adriana Locke, you took Elin and Whit on an emotional journey and this reader was with them every step of the way.

The pairing of Emma Wilder and Lance Greenfield for this audiobook was truly inspired. Both are exception performers but together they captured the essence of this emotional book bringing out the beauty, pain, love and heartache of Elin and Whit's story perfectly.

Deep scars don't heal easy. Be prepared to cry.

This story made me feel every up and down the characters went through and both Emma Wilder and Lance Greenfield brought the characters to life. They conveyed every emotion they went through and I heard the emotion in their voices and felt it all along with them.

Adriana Locke wrote a beautifully emotional story that I loved and when put in audio form it packed an even bigger emotional punch.

I can't recommend this story enough, whether you read the book or listen to the audio don't miss out on this story.

All the feels, and more!

I was scared of this story, cause I knew it would hurt... Badly so!
I finally put my big girl's pants on, took a deep breath and started this amazing and painful journey with Ty and Elin.

Girlllll.... Let me tell you this...
Check your mental health and grab a box of tissues, cause this book is painfully real!

When I finally thought that everything was peachy, and they would finally have their deserved HEA, Adriana brought her sledgehammer to the party, and just slaughtered my poor heart!

This book wrecked me!
I ugly cried with how close to home it hit me... Really freaking close!

This is not a meet/cute story, even if you have little bits of how they started, and how incredible their connection was since the very beginning, the book is not about that.
Ty and Elin are married since the beginning. They're each other's person and clearly soulmates, deeply in love.
But life happens, and realistically, there's not a single marriage in the world that is a fairytale all the time. Impossible!

I loved this book!
Even when I cried, even when they were falling apart with their own insecurities, and especially at how hard they fought for each other and for their marriage.

I'm Elin... Her shoes fit me perfectly and I was rooting for her until the last page!

Ty's groveling was on another level!
Chef's kiss!
I'll raise my glass to Elin, cause I would have caved way sooner. 😂

This book is about love, about the hard choices, about friendship and our chosen family, about hope, about relationships and everything that happens in life...
The good, the bad and the forever!

I highly recommend this book.
Wish I could see more of their HEA.

Ty & Elin

This book was not what I expected and definitely not your typical Adriana Locke book but it was sooo good. My heart is still crying.
In this book we don’t just have a couple trying to fix their marriage and going through the motions of getting back to their normal but also a group of friends that become a found family and the sacrifices they make for each other. This book was just beautiful!!
I listened to the new recorded version of the audiobook with Lance Greenfield as Ty and Emma Wilder as Elin. Both narrators were fantastic but I feel Lance was the absolute best with his portrait of Ty especially towards the end of the book when (no spoiler) something deeply moving happens.

Sad and heartbroken

This book affected me greatly in many ways due to my own personal experiences and it left me both sad, heartbroken and angry at the author for putting me in this position. To be fair it’s not the worst thing to be reminded about the impact we have on people and the way we can do better. I loved the book and the narration and I just needed a little break near the end to process and then go forward to a happy ending. If you like your books to be an inspiration and deeply emotional, then this is for you.

An emotional listen; standalone story

Marriage in trouble trope, high feels, fertility troubles, a long-time group of friends/family, standalone

A book where it might be best to just start it and enjoy the ride (as long as you are in the correct headspace for it)

Fabulous narration but that's expected with these two very talented narrators. Highly recommend.
