Summary

A CHILLING NORFOLK BROADS CRIME THRILLER!

A convicted psychopath with an early release, a couple found butchered on board their boat, and a twelve-year-old boy, hiding in fear or already lying dead.

Struggling with his new role as a detective chief inspector, John Tanner is warned of a convicted psychopath’s early release. When a couple is found later that day; the man stabbed to death, the woman with her throat cut, he's forced to assume the convict is responsible. But when the male victim turns out to be heir to a global pharmaceutical company, and his twelve-year-old son is nowhere to be found, he has to start looking closer at the victim’s family, and their sprawling stately ancestral home.

Set within the mysterious beauty of the Norfolk Broads, this fast-paced British detective series is a dark cozy Norfolk murder mystery with a slice of humour and a touch of romance, one that will have you guessing until the very end, when the last shocking twist is finally revealed.

Great read/listen

Another enjoyable and gripping story. Love the Broads settings, easy to picture them when they are so familiar.

Struggled with the language around women

I enjoyed the story and performance. But I’m really depressed about the language around women’s bodies and the failure of senior staff to stop the ‘banter’. And why would someone choose to work in a situation with a boss who couldn’t be bothered to prep for an interview….

Entertaining story.

Loved the repartee between the characters. Though it was a bit dark in parts it held my interest.

Sadly a declining series.

I knew this series was becoming something that I didn't enjoy. I am now annoyed that I didn't let it go.
Sadly this book was not very good. That is not to say there weren't moments that were interesting and entertaining but on the whole I struggled with this book. The main problem is that DCI Tanner is a 1970's copper in a 2020's world. He is unprofessional, judgemental, and a bully, and very unlikeable. This makes the book very unbelievable and diminishes what could be a halfway decent story.
The narration is pretty good and the narrator does a good job of trying to make this all seem very real. Overall 2.5 stars
Narration 4.5 stars
Story 2 stars.

Excellent series

This has been an excellent series but as others have said anyone in the police behaving In such a sexist manner ought to have been disciplined. That aside I enjoyed the book especially with Jonathan Keeble’s excellent narration. He could read the menu and make it sound exciting

So, so good! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I am always delighted when a new book in this series releases, and this one was just as brilliant as previous books. Even though it is a Police Procedural, and dealing with Murder, I love that David Blake writes so much dry humour for John Tanner & his colleagues, meaning that there are always laugh out loud moments throughout the books.
Excellent writing, combined with Jonathan Keeble's incredible narration skills make this a fantastic series, which I hope will continue for many more books to come!

What has gone wrong?

I have really enjoyed this series but something has gone horribly wrong with this book.

The narration was as good as ever and to some extent the narrator saved the book. Unfortunately a potentially interesting plot was ruined by because the details were totally unbelievable. We were expected to believe that a senior police officer would preside over a total shambles in his team, would allow more junior officers to be insubordinate, lazy, incompetent and lecherous especially in the midst of a multiple murder investigation. We were expected to believe that Tanner, an experienced and conscientious senior officer was so incompetent that he couldn’t effectively delegate tasks, couldn’t managed a press briefing efficiently, would speak to the press and to suspects in such an unprofessional manner that it would jeopardise the case (and probably his career) and that he would put himself and others in needless danger. It was impossible to suspend my disbelief.

Despite a potentially promising plot this book was a big disappointment. If there is another book in the series I may buy it in the hope that it will be better, but after listening to this book the author has gone down a few notches in my estimation.

A Good Story but

it is a such a shame that all the female characters sound like Julian Clary.
