Summary

To tell the truth is a revolutionary act.

Battered by floods and crushed by overtourism, the city of Venice faces an uncertain future. The election of a new Mayor, therefore, has never felt more important.

As the candidates jostle for position and alliances are made and promises broken, Andrea Mazzon, a controversial writer and historian, emerges as a strong candidate.

Nathan Sutherland, meanwhile, has more important things on his mind as he investigates the case of an elderly British academic who has disappeared while researching the fate of his grandfather during the Great War. The trail leads to a remote Common-wealth war cemetery where, under the ice and snow, Nathan makes a discovery that links the terrible events of a century ago with the electoral campaign in La Serenissima. A campaign that might ultimately set the victor on the road to the Senate - and on the road to murder. . .

Critic reviews

"An unputdownable thriller." (Gregory Dowling)

"It is no surprise to find that Philip Gwynne Jones lives in Venice...art and architecture interweave into a story that builds to an almost surreal climax." (Daily Mail)

"Gwynne Jones's talent for evoking place and atmosphere is clear as ever." (Literary Review)

Another story of Nathan Sutherland at his best.

Really enjoyed another one of Nathan Sutherland's, 'dog with a bone' , honorary consular adventures. It has now got me ready for another refreshing Spritz.

Charming series

I love this whole series. Nathan isn’t a detective or have any mad skills, he just bumbles his way in and out of situations with the best of intentions. I’m also in love with Gramsci the cat!

Utterly Brilliant

This would be great story - excellent narration too - set in many places. But what makes it outstanding is the sense of place. I’m half Venetian. The author really, really gets inside the spirit of Venice and the Venetians. He knows and describes the physical Venice perfectly. But almost more importantly he totally inhabits the day to day reality of Venetians.
He doesn’t talk down about the tourists or moan “like old ladies in the Drs waiting room” (Grazie Donna Leon) about the decline of Venice. But he does get across the deep sadness of living in what was a working city and now is becoming Disney land - baseball capped tourists with tastes and manners to match. And yes I have genuinely heard them saying that ‘the one in Las Vegas has better food”. Thank god indeed for January, classic negroni, Spritz bitter and fish from the Rialto market (at least for now).
Rant over. This book ticks all the boxes. Great plot with twists, excellent research that makes you want to learn more, brilliant characters (major and minor),perfect pace - the lot.
I really hope someone has taken TV/film options and please can I have at least a walk on part.
Grazie John Luff

Another very enjoyable book

I have enjoyed all of this series. The characters are likeable, the stories enjoyable and there’s nothing too gruesome. Well done Philip. Hope you’ve started work on the next.

Real Venice

Great storyline in a wonderful setting. Venice as it is when tourists are absent. Nathan and his wife are lovely people.
