Summary

Time calls the shots.

Unwitting time traveler Joseph Bridgeman is adjusting to life in the present and wondering if his traveling days are behind him. But when he’s contacted by the Continuum, an organized group of time travelers based in the future, he learns his career is just getting started.

The Continuum needs Joe’s help. One of their operatives is missing, last seen in 19th-century Paris, and they believe Joe’s ability to see the past might be the only way to find him. Teamed up with Gabrielle Green, an acerbic, wisecracking traveler, Joe heads back to 1873 on his most dangerous mission yet, one that will take him deep inside a burning opera house.

But how will Joe succeed when his new companion clearly hates his guts, the missing traveler disappears the second anyone sets eyes on him, and a familiar foe threatens to trap them in the past for good? With help on hand from his best friend, Vinny, and mysterious clues hidden in his sister Amy’s paintings, Joe must hone his gift, develop new skills, and figure out a way to complete his mission before the blazing inferno comes crashing down around them all.

Another exciting adventure

I loved being back with Jo and swept up on one of his incredible experiences again. The characters are well drawn and interesting plus we get to meet and understand more about the other time travelers. It’s like meeting up with old friends and then sliding down a thrilling slippery slope with some of them, finding yourself in a whirling action packed adventure movie and then transported back again to the comforts of normal English life in Cheltenham. But craving more. I’m looking forward to the next book!

Light, intelligent, fun time travel

This book is part of a series so if you do enjoy, track down the others. The last one I listened to was v similar.

A pleasant exploration of relationships, in essence, with a canter about history and parallel universe theory. Kindness rules in our protagonist’s world, however, so that’s something he can hold on to as he pings about on missions through time, being ‘special’.

Nice narration. I’m not entirely sure why our hero, Joseph, has an American accent while everyone else is English, including his sister and parents, and they appear to all live in Cirencester. Maybe it’s because he’s replaced another version of himself. Laddy Joseph, who breaks hearts, cheats and is generally a bit mean. Which this Joseph most definitely isn’t. He asks for advice. On emotional issues. I know!

If you’re confused, I don’t blame you. But you know, parallel universe / time travel life is like that.

If you’ve got a long journey this is a pleasant companion. Enjoy.

The longer this goes on the more I love it

Really enjoyed the premise of this - love the idea of time travelling and having the opportunity to change history. The characters are developing nicely, even getting to grips with the American narrator. Each of these books has taken less and less time to listen to. I find myself taking sneaky listens as often as I’m able to - hiding myself away for a few moments fix. I’m almost scared to get the next one as there’s no more yet…

Another enjoyable read in an enjoyable series..

The excellent narrator, who I have previously suggested isn’t a good fit for this series (being American narrating a British book) blends much better with this story due to the more varied accents throughout and I therefore don’t have the same criticism with this one. Otherwise, it’s more of the same (not a bad thing) with a sizeable dose of upping the ante on the futuristic technology, some of it a little unbelievable. I very much enjoyed it as usual and although it’s never going to make my top 10 list, I have already pre ordered the next book. Good story, good characters, what more could you want?

Loved it. Book 4 pre-ordered

Great - all characters nicely presented and ready for their stories to develop further. This is a great series, it has got me through more car journeys and housework than I care to mention! Very much enjoying the rhythm though, and cunningly hidden clues that point at an ending you think you can predict but...

A Yankie in King Arthur's Court

To get to the end of book 3 in a series of 4, defines a fan. I found this story to be well written, well performed (still have a problem with the accents Ray uses). I had to smile at the Cock-er-ney attempt-made me think of Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. The Welsh accent...what was that!!? Also I'm surprised to see that Arnold Schwarzenegger didn't get any credits for his narration. Enough said.
Now I'm really looking forward to book 4 to see how Nick answers the obvious questions, if he has chosen to do so.
The way Nick described the escape from the opera house was so good (vivid/heroic/thrilling/heart stopping/captivating), it was worth it just for that.
We know Amy survives but what about Alexa? Although there is a hint at the end of 3.
I did hear on the interweb that Ray wanted to try his Scotish and Geordie accents but his voice coach hasn't been north of Watford, so that was abandoned.

My favorite of the series so far

This is the third book I’ve read about the time traveling Joseph and definitely my favorite so far. Loved the explanations into what can and can’t be done and also the snarky character of the lady time traveller. Will look out for more titles from this author.
