Summary
Read by the author, Patric Gagne.
'Your friends would probably describe me as nice. But guess what? I can't stand your friends. I'm a liar. I'm a thief. I'm highly manipulative. I don't care what other people think. I'm capable of almost anything.'
Sociopath: A Memoir is at once a mesmerizing tale of a life lived on the edge of the law, a redemptive love story and a moving account of one woman's battle to create a place for herself and a deeper understanding of people who, like her, are sociopaths.
Ever since she was a small child, Patric Gagne knew she was different. Although she felt intense love for her family and her best friend, David, these connections were never enough to make her be 'good', or to reduce her feelings of apathy and frustration. As she grew older, her behaviour escalated from petty theft through to breaking and entering, stalking, and worse.
As an adult, Patric realized that she was a sociopath. Although she instantly connected with the official descriptions of sociopathy, she also knew they didn't tell the full story: she had a plan for her life, had nurtured close relationships and was doing her best (most of the time) to avoid harming others. As her darker impulses warred against her attempts to live a settled, loving life with her partner, Patric began to wonder - was there a way for sociopaths to integrate happily into society? And could she find it before her own behaviour went a step too far?

Eye opening
This is a well written book with eye opening information on what it’s like to be a sociopath. It reframes the condition as something that is just as natural as any other state of mind.

Fascinating
Absolutely loved this memoir. The way it’s written is enthralling, I literally couldn’t stop listening to it. And having a better understanding of sociopathy is truly fascinating. I feel very differently about the word sociopath now. Thank you so much for sharing your story in such a clear and engaging way 🙏

well worth a second listen..
This story hopefully helps people to understand people that think and feel differently and perhaps for some may help people to understand themselves more. I personally found it very insightful how the thought processes, views and angles are all clearly explained: you are along for the ride in an internal monolouge in Patric's head and it is fascinating. However the author might feel, I hope she feels proud of a great book :-)

what a fantastic book
The author gives such insight into to a really Taboo subject and does so in such a raw, truthful manner that you question everything society had told you about sociopaths. More understanding and awareness is needed and Patrick Gagne is leading the way. I thoroughly enjoyed the book especially the way she manages to incorporate humour into such a dark subject. It was read very well by her, I would highly recommend anyone read it who wants to look at sociopathy from a different unique angle.

I think this is the best book I’ve ever read
I binged this book in a few days, I never thought I’d be able to relate to a sociopath. I have autism and ADHD and there are definitely some overlaps! I totally get the pressure thing, when I’m in a long meeting or lecture and have to sit still, I feel like I’m going to explode!
A podcast with you and David would be amazing 🤩

Loved it loved it loved it
This book is so interesting and so
Insightful. I had no idea at the lack of information or access to help for sociopaths. I hope this book helps people. I believe that this author was and is in an incredible unique situation where she was surrounded by people who lifted her up. I can only imagine what it’s like to live with this level of apathy.
