Summary

Visceral, disturbing and chilling in its realism, World War Z is perhaps the most famous work from the world's foremost expert on our undead counterparts. Paired with the equally gripping The Zombie Survival Guide, there is no better preparation for the inevitable uprising.

"The end was near." Voices from the Zombie War.

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched firsthand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet.

He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living - or at least the undead - hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.

Excellent world building

This book was throughly engaging throughout. It gave great scale to the confilct in both the world building and how it took perspectives from so many different people dealing with the dead.

Would highly recommend if you are looking for a book with great world building.

Fantastic

I’d seen the film first, that was good but very different to this. Really enjoyed the book and all the small stories.

A different but interesting book

First of all nothing to do with the film other than name.

The premise is a large series of interviews spanning across a lot of people from a lot of places.

It takes a little to get going and it takes a while to get used to but it gets very good later. A very interesting view of how to government and poltics would handle it.

Different.

I will be honest, I didn't finish this one, probably got about 70% into it. I did enjoy it and I did think it was really well suited to Audio Format with the way it is told. I will probably go back and complete it at some point, it just didn't really have any main character I think was why I got a bit easily distracted from this one.

Best zombie story I have read. :)

I do not like zombie stories as I do not believe in possibility of zombies, at least not as living dead. But I like this story from the social and military and also people's personal point of view. How people would react on any such problems and what kind of solutions you could use and how they would have to cope and what might happen to nature. Also the insight on how and why our infrastructures are or are not weak on any such cases of global issues. Even the part on astronauts was very well thought through, how they had to cope in space. It was not just a zombie attack story, it was much more. So I have to give a maximum result to this book.

Excellent audiobook

Downloaded this as I loved the Paperbook.

The concept of an oral history works really well in the audio format - the voice acting is pretty good on the whole.

The whole thing seems very real and believable...

Well recommended!

Like nothing I've read before.

I loved this book, I've never read anything with this layout and it works so well. Little snippets from peoples lives during a complete meltdown of life as we know it. The story was fantastic as a whole, some peoples stories more interesting than others but that's all personal opinion.

The only problem I had was that some of the voice actors annoyed me, fake accents that you can spot a mile off can be distracting but if you can get past that and just listen to the story, you'll love this book.

Stick with it and be rewarded!

I really enjoyed this book. Clever and engaging. Many voices and many stories. Worth it.

The multiple voices take some getting used to if your norm is one voice for an entire book. This was a first form me and I found each performance brilliant, no idea how accurate any accents were but each part was beautifully read and performed with emotion you could really feel. My preferred way of reading was one story/character/voice at a time on a walk or getting ready for bed. whenever I had 20 minutes or so to spare. I never got bored and was able to fully engage with each one. Give this book a go and stick to just one interview at a time, each one is different and interesting and goes by before you know it.

Brilliant

After watching the film I thought I’d listen to the book on Audible. To be honest I enjoyed the Audible book more than the film. Brilliantly narrated by all and make long boring car to work journeys fly by! Thank you all 👍
