Summary

A thousand years ago evil came to the land and has ruled with an iron hand ever since. The sun shines fitfully under clouds of ash that float down endlessly from the constant eruption of volcanoes. A dark lord rules through the aristocratic families, and ordinary folk are condemned to lives in servitude, sold as goods, labouring in the ash fields. But now a troublemaker has arrived, and there is rumour of revolt. A revolt that depends on criminal that no-one can trust and a young girl who must master Allomancy - the magic that lies in all metals.

A Great Introduction to Sanderson's work

Sanderson is an incredible writer!! His worlds are so immersive and their "magic" systems are flawless.
Mistborn is an amazing introduction to all of Sanderson's work. These characters are incredibly multidimensional and relatable. The attention to detail! Oh and very forget the breadcrumbs.
I found myself trying to guess what was ahead but each time I was wrong.
I'm relistening to this story so I can really appreciate the depth and foresight that'll be evident in the 7th book.

One character and one twist carries this book

The first in the series and it was good fun, if a little simplistic and sometimes cheesy, but with an interesting and entirely different world as well as a good magic system, it held my interest. The characters were pretty good, though, it’s only our main man, Kelsier, who really stood out. Without him I don’t know thst I would have enjoyed it anywhere near as much. The story is ok but it does feel like just not a lot is happening, or it just happens in the background. There isn’t much detail or struggle or, I’m not sure, something, just something is missing. But then finally, it is Kelsier and his big twist that brought it together, making the book more interesting. I still wasn’t overly impressed really, it was fun enough and everyone raves about Sanderson so I have to crack on, and this apparently is the best introduction to him, still I wouldn’t have liked something more, and would have expected more considering the hype.

Finished book two already, maybe book three will bring it all home.

Superb story and storytelling

This book, not my usual genre, was a fantastic listen from start to finish. A great story with complex characters, the narration was superb, bringing it all to life.

My first Sanderson original

I've listened to The Wheel of Time and I'm familiar with both the writer and narrater.

I really enjoyed the book, it took me a while to figure out who the main character is and I was certain I would forget the names thrown at me. But that wasn't the case. Everyone who's important is memorable from a prose and voice acting standpoint.

+Very unique magic system
+Good pacing
+Women aren't stereotypes or breasts that can talk

Brandon Sanderson proves a great find again

What did you like most about The Final Empire?

A great magic system that is gradually described to the reader without over explanation getting in the way of narrative.

What did you like best about this story?

The story drew me along so completely that the surprises were surprising and at the same time made complete sense and fitted.

What about Michael Kramer’s performance did you like?

Michael Kramer brings the characters to life and I never found myself confused as to who was who.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The Empire needs a New Hero

Any additional comments?

Having only relatively recently discovered Brandon Sanderson i am looking forward to catching up with what he has written so far and keenly await the next in the Stormlight Archive. He creates large worlds that have breadth and depth while not over explaining with characters and plots. If you like fantasy you'll love the Mistborn Trilogy.

A pleasant Surprise

What made the experience of listening to The Final Empire the most enjoyable?

An interesting storyline with a particularly nasty baddie. The narration was first rate and the whole listen moved along at a good pace.

What other book might you compare The Final Empire to, and why?

Its written by the author of the Stormlight Archives. If you enjoy that series, then this is well worth a listen

Which character – as performed by Michael Kramer – was your favourite?

I think Michael Kramer brought all the characters to life. Nice Job.

Any additional comments?

I have now purchased the second instalment. The series is excellent value for money and helps the mundane duties in your day go much faster. Give it a go if you want something different. Be patient in the beginning, its a long story, but if you stick with it long enough, you get hooked.
