Summary

A thousand years ago evil came to the land and has ruled with an iron hand ever since. The sun shines fitfully under clouds of ash that float down endlessly from the constant eruption of volcanoes. A dark lord rules through the aristocratic families, and ordinary folk are condemned to lives in servitude, sold as goods, labouring in the ash fields. But now a troublemaker has arrived, and there is rumour of revolt. A revolt that depends on criminal that no-one can trust and a young girl who must master Allomancy - the magic that lies in all metals.

An incredible fantasy

Amazing. Just amazing in every way. Deep, complex, lovable characters. An intricate plot, fascinating worldbuilding and a writing style that never lost my attention for a moment. I’ve found my new favourite author

Compelling story and performance

Short answer to anyone considering a listen, this book alone is worth it but the narration makes the experience that much more memorable. Go for it.

The longer, not nearly long enough, answer is; if you want a story that is well developed in forms of world building and characters, you can't go far wrong with Brandon Sanderson's books.
The main cast are brilliant all with unique personalities which lends to the individual roles each of them play.

The story itself isn't exactly complex but the fantastic world building the Sanderson uses makes up for this, the premise maybe simple however the execution - this is to point out the special moments that make the reader/listener smile, laugh, cry. Truly this book is one to remember, pulling the reader along in its own pace carefully crafted through out the book - is near perfection depending on personal tastes.

Again, I can not recommend this series, author and narrator enough as they're all worth the time investment.

Good but not logical in one major way.

So the man dubbed the survivor who has masses of experience can't do it, but an emotionally damaged girl from the street with zero education, minimal training can apparently, and all this despite making mistake after mistake. Next she abandons the one man who's shown her kindness acted like the father she never had so she can essentially run off with the first 'real' guy she meets... Bad enough but the whole job she signed up for was to destroy this guys family (mainly), then it takes her way longer to realise what the lord commander was than I did, good idea poor execution it echoes storm light archive and storm light has better characters and protagonists, so read that way better.

Truly Gripping

Absolutely loved this book. I was intimidated at first by the listening time but I became so engrossed with the story that I finished it in just 4 days. Couldn’t recommend highly enough!

A great heist story with big stakes.

Very well written and kept me captivated from beginning to end. Incredible narration and a great interesting setting. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

this is really 5!

Okok, understand me correctly please.

This IS 5 stars. The story IS 5 stars. The whole concept and execution IS 5 stars.

The 4 star rating is because I can't see beyond the writing. Yes, Sanderson is magnificently good at writing. What gets to me though is the repetitiveness.

Here's the thing.

All Sanderson books are long, which is awesome because his stories are just so worth it. With long books come endless possibilities, but also a whole ton of risks. In this case, there were words that were used over and over and over again so much so that I once in a while just let out a fairly loud aaarrrgghhhhh!!!! And stopped because I just couldn't listen to another iteration of the same action. With long books I find thus to be very common. You have so much to write that you need to simplify it and so you go for simple words and you get stuck in a certain rythm.

In this particular book, my problems were with a few words, but especially "paused".

Every character, all the time, even if they didn't do anything, weren't about to do anything, they PAUSED. ALL. THE. TIME.

It was just so ridiculous. I'm sorry but I just can't forgive that because it annoyed me so much I had to stop reading this incredibly cool, awesome, giant, intense, adventurous story! Because the repetition got to me! That's just not ok.

I still HIGHLY recommend this book. It goes into my absolute favorites, that's how good the story is.
