Summary

One of The Times’ 25 Best Audiobooks.

HBO’s hit series A Game of Thrones is based on George R. R. Martin’s internationally best-selling series A Song of Ice and Fire, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A Game of Thrones is the first volume in the series.

Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plot, lusts and intrigues, to the vast and savage eastern lands, all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men...all will play the Game of Thrones.

Winter is coming....

Critic reviews

"A Game of Thrones grabs hold and won’t let go. It’s brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

"Colossal, staggering... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world...one of the greats of fantasy literature." (SFX)

"Fantasy literature has never shied away from grandeur, but the sheer-mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads.... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias." (Guardian)

Good

The audio was botched as some parts. Rare but noticeable. Other than this it's a good book.

GoT

Quite a few mispronunciations of names and places. But other than that, a very well read book. I’m surprised the mistakes were not altered before publishing considering the hefty price tag

The Finest Author of a Generation

In a field of artistic craftwork that is infested year on year with an ever growing sworm of mediocre craftsmen, there comes about only a few every generation who not only redefine the word 'genius' but inspire a new wave of artists to follow in their footsteps. Jane Austin and Vergina Wolfe inspired a generation of women to test their skills and garden their fingers at a craft that at that period of time time, a male dominated craft. Then came such greats as Edgar Allan Poe, whose words of horror and the macarbe ripple down the centuries to haunt the nightmares and eight the spark of inspiration in those who would seek to follow. Then came J. R. R. Tolkien, whose epic tales of elves and men, fuelled by a love of history and sheer genius brought unto him the respect and regard of millions and whose style of craft is still imitated even to this day; And now, woven by the exceptional voice of the late Roy Dotrice, so you dear listener will harken the words of the defining authors of 'this' generation.

George R. R. Martin takes the craft inspired by Tolkien and infuses it with such a raw sense of realism, and told in such a way that your voice will roar with outrage at every unexpected twist, your heart will yearn to be told more when the great man speaks of the deep and passionate love found between the mighty Khal Drogo and of the divine beauty of his Khaleesi, and feel your skin crawl and your stomach learch as you listen to the vile acts of treason and of lust taken by those during times of peace and war.

Inspired by the War of the Roses and written by a man blessed with an unparalleled skill of artistic expression, A Game of Thrones is the start of a creative masterpiece that I am so thankful to have discovered. And so I bid you dear reader of my review, come... let Roy Dotrice whisk you away to the Seven Kingdoms, to the Realms of God's and Men... and witness something that only few can ever say they did. Witness the start of a new chapter in the pages of literature history.

GoT ASOIAF Wonderfully written /narrated

Loved it, although it made me cry in places at the seemly injustice that prevailed
