Summary

One of The Times’ 25 Best Audiobooks.

HBO’s hit series A Game of Thrones is based on George R. R. Martin’s internationally best-selling series A Song of Ice and Fire, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A Game of Thrones is the first volume in the series.

Summers span decades. Winter can last a lifetime. And the struggle for the Iron Throne has begun.

It will stretch from the south, where heat breeds plot, lusts and intrigues, to the vast and savage eastern lands, all the way to the frozen north, where an 800-foot wall of ice protects the kingdom from the dark forces that lie beyond. Kings and queens, knights and renegades, liars, lords and honest men...all will play the Game of Thrones.

Winter is coming....

Critic reviews

"A Game of Thrones grabs hold and won’t let go. It’s brilliant." (Robert Jordan)

"Colossal, staggering... Martin captures all the intoxicating complexity of the Wars of the Roses or Imperial Rome in his imaginary world...one of the greats of fantasy literature." (SFX)

"Fantasy literature has never shied away from grandeur, but the sheer-mind-boggling scope of this epic has sent other fantasy writers away shaking their heads.... Its ambition: to construct the Twelve Caesars of fantasy fiction, with characters so venomous they could eat the Borgias." (Guardian)

Issues with the narrator...

For my first audio book I thought I would listen to A Game of Thrones as I had read it before. It was a great little addition for my walks. The audiobook itself was good but I have to say that I cringed at some of the pronunciations by the narrator...

love the book some of the pronunciation odd

the book is great (seriously who hasn't read/seen/heard this at this point)
only gripe is how he pronounced little fingers first name and that basically all the older men had the same "voice" ie robert baratheon sounds like jeor moroment ect but otherwise enjoyable.

Great book inconsistent narrator

Love the book. Superb. But such a shame that the narrator is so inconsistent with his accents and voices. and some point Tyrion becomes Welsh. And his pronunciation of names sometimes slips inexplicably.

Dumb voices

Amazing book, deserves better than Roy Dotrice and his 3 silly voices. You got the ork voice, the skeletor voice and the country bumpkin shire folk voice.

Fantastic to hear it!

I first read this book in 1996, never imagining the film and movement that was to follow in the recent years..... So it was an absolute pleasure to HEAR it read to me through audio books. What fantastic writing! What gripping and thrilling characters and of course the Dire Wollfs!
Roy Dotrice was spot on with his accents and narration.
An absolute classic.

After watching the several times!

After watching the show several times. I finally caved in and got into the books. It's weird going back to the beginning of the show but having to imagine it all through the words of the narrator but with his flowing delivery and varying of dialects & voices for each character in the book. He makes it a lot easier to create the world of Game Of Thrones.

Obviously due to watching the show I could piece bits together and remember how the depicted each scene and tbh. I feel they got it right and I can't think of anyone else who could have played the roles as good ir better than the Actors & Actresses who did. Especially Tyrion!!

All in all a great listen/read and I look forward to listening to the rest of the books!

The story is amazing

The story is amazing, a master piece ...but the narration...terrible I'm afraid. He makes everyone sound weird and old and spoils most characters
