Summary

Bernie Gunther returns to his desk on homicide from the horrors of the Eastern Front to find Berlin changed for the worse.

He begins to investigate the death of a railway worker but is obliged to drop everything when Reinhard Heydrich of the SD orders him to Prague to spend a weekend at his country house. Bernie accepts reluctantly, especially when he learns that his fellow guests are all senior figures in the SS and SD.

The weekend quickly turns sour when a body is found in a room locked from the inside. If Bernie fails to solve this impossible mystery not only is his reputation at stake, but also that of Reinhard Heydrich, a man who cannot bear to lose face.

Wrong voice for Bernie Gunther

A fitting addition to the Bernie Gunther series with a murder in Berlin and a murder in Prague being tied together. The fundamental problem for me in this series is the narration by Jonathan Keeble. He does the other characters perfectly well, but his voice for Gunther is all wrong - almost painful sounding at times. It’s so distracting I actually returned other books in the series before listening to them. If you can deal with the voice then a satisfying yarn.

Another Bernie Gunther story

Not one of Philip Kerr’s best but very interesting in its interweaving of fact and fiction. The hoarse narration took some getting used to, but overall I enjoyed the story.

Philip Kerr’s best yet

I am working my way through the BG series and this is my favourite to date. A tremendous blend of fact and fiction. Beautifully narrated by Jonathan Keeble.

Back to the Bernie I love

Gunther is a great character and I’ve enjoyed following him on his various adventures but I must admit I’ve found the ones following his life post war less satisfying. This is back to a good old police procedural unpicking a murder amongst the staff of Reinhard Heydrich against the background of a search for a Czech spy. As usual, Bernie’s humanity and sense of justice carry him, not altogether unscathed, through the horrors of the war and nazism. It’s a timely reminder, with the rise of the far right worldwide, how good people can be persuaded to do bad things. For anyone interested in knowing more about Heydrich, I can recommend HHHH by Laurent Binet.

Brilliant.

Another brilliant Gunther story and extremely well put together, weaving true events with Gunther, Philip Kerr has another best seller. Jonathan Keeble as ever, wonderful at establishing a connection with the listener's. You just have to keep listening. Can't wait to get into the next one.

Brilliant admixture of procedural and historical research

Possibly my favourite procedural- where the humanity of the author shines through that of his protagonist
