Summary
Ever dreamed of starting over?
Issy Randall can bake. No, more than that - Issy can create stunning, mouth-wateringly divine cakes. After a childhood spent in her beloved Grampa Joe’s bakery, she has undoubtedly inherited his talent. So when she’s made redundant from her safe but dull City job, Issy decides to seize the moment and open up her own café. It should be a piece of cake, right
Wrong. As her friends point out, she has trouble remembering where she left her house keys, let alone trying to run her own business. But Issy is determined. Armed with recipes posted to her from Grampa, and with her local bank manager fighting her corner, Issy attempts to prove everyone wrong. Following your dreams is never easy, and this is no exception. Can Issy do it?

Great escapist listening
Loved it. Voices didn't detract from the story - rather added to it - I'm impressed with Penelope Rawlins' characterisation and ability to completely change her voice. Lighthearted, fun, highly absorbing and enjoyable. Recommended.

Nice story, easy to listen to.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes I would recommend.
It's a nice story. A bit predictable but that did not detract from the enjoyment.
Would you be willing to try another book from Jenny Colgan? Why or why not?
Yes. I enjoy her writing style and it will probably be easy listening.
Have you listened to any of Penelope Rawlins’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I have not listened to this narrator before.
If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Watch your waistline. You may become addicted to cup cakes!

Kept my interest
I always know I’m going to like a book within the first couple of minutes of listening. I love all Jenny Colgan books. The only thing though is that I think there’s a tiny chunk missing in Ch.18. Without spoiling the story I couldn’t find when Izzy finds out about her shop being sold. I listened to it over and over. Weird.

Dull
This book is rather dull and the main character is tedious. There's a big difference being nice and being a doormat, and Issy is definitely a doormat. It's sickening. Why do authors insist on writing female characters that are so weak and pathetic? Managed to get as far as 10 hours in, but when she allowed herself to be bullied into yet another situation she didn't want I gave up and moved onto another book. I might go back and finish it at some point, but right now I just can't take anymore of pathetic, sappy idiot.

Nice Story
I did enjoy this book in audio format. It was a lovely story, but I too wished I'd just read it instead of listening to an audio format. I have to agree with other reviewers that the narration of Grandpa, Graham and Austin were terrible. The narrator made the men sound creepy and odd with her vocal impersonations of them. Which was a shame as Grandpa and Austin were probably quite nice although I cringed everytime I heard their voices.
Having said that, the narrators voice was nice and easy to listen to just not when doing men voices!

A brilliant first read!
As a baker, currently doing slimming world, I fancied a little baking novel to satisfy my love of baking. It did actually end up with me eating cake, but nevermind.
This is the first time I've read anything by Jenny and I must say, with this one, I was impressed. The piece was intriguing and the character sketches well written giving the reader a good idea of the characters from Jenny's minds eye. I personally found all of the characters involving, even minor ones ending up to play a bigger part. I was keen to know what happened next so carried on and finished in a week. I found some of the swearing unnecessary however. As a baker, of course, I loved the recipes and will be coming back to these.

Lovely warm absorbing story
I read this a number of years ago & remember enjoying it, & so thought I’d revisit it with Audible.
A lovely story! It’s written in such a way that you feel the atmosphere of the story, not just hear it. One feels absorbed in the lives of the characters & can easily imagine the cafe.
Wonderful & warm like a hug!
I’m sure I will listen to it again!

easy listening.
Any additional comments?
well written characters, issy being a favourite as well a lewis pearl's little boy.
sprinkled with recipes, the character's hopes and fears, and Penelope Rawlins performance which brought all the characters to life this is a good book to listen to between the heavier stuff (crime etc.,).
looking forward to Christmas at the cupcake café.

Sweet and warm feel good book
Really really enjoyed this book! For someone who rarely listens to fiction, I very much enjoyed this and have found the fiction genre that I find entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable. I was originally drawn towards the book by the cupcakes and food descriptions.
This is a lovely listen. Although I initially thought I’d struggle to complete it, I found myself engrossed and captivated by the story and characters.
The author has described characters and scenes so well that I was able to easily picture these in my mind.
Narrator has a nice voice too. It’s difficult to change voices according to characters and whilst many reviewers didn’t appreciate this, I think she has done a good job.
An easy listen and generally likeable characters.
Thank you Audible.
